Top 3 "#benefits" that aren't a benefit. 🎗️ 1️⃣ "28 Days holiday including BH" - Sorry, that's literally the national minimum.... 2️⃣ "Pension" - Yeah, that's also mandatory. (If you contribute more as an employer, say so! That's great and genuinely a benefit!) 3️⃣ "Your birthday off". Being somewhat facetious here as it is a benefit, but honestly, just add an additional day to the annual leave package. The exact date might not be ideal for a leave day A lot of others that could be on this list, I would say are benefits, but subjective. Have a I missed any? Toastie maker....so what you're saying is your office has a kitchen. Designated parking space - Great I can park my car 10 feet closer to the office door, but also you fail to mention it's taxable. My favourite - Christmas and new year off. Wow. Thank you! (What this actually meant is they close between Christmas and new year. You have to save holiday days to see you through this period or you won't be paid...the literal opposite of a benefit)

As someone who has only been in the workforce for a few years, this has all been confusing for me as well when looking for jobs - like you said, it's mandatory! With the birthday as well, already having mine on a holiday isn't going to help me, whilst an extra day I could take at any time would be a lot more flexible and suit more people. Thanks for the post! 😊

I've interviewed at a couple of companies that'll give you "your birthday off" but only if it falls on a working day. My birthday will never fall on a working day, what a great benefit.

Absolutely agree, Rohan! True benefits should go beyond what's legally required and actually contribute to employee well-being and engagement. Offering tailored personal development opportunities or flexible working arrangements could be more meaningful. I would love if the employer contributed to childcare costs! #EmployeeValue #BeyondTheBasics #childcare

I think most businesses make the mistake of exchanging monetary value for a "benefit" when most people would rather have the money / equivalent value - to your point, birthday off, why not just add a days leave? The genuine benefits I value are things that money can't buy. For instance a previous employer had a fully stocked breakfast station, so I could actually get to the office early and know I could get a good brekkie - it gave me the gift of time! Or places that have authentic flexible working or a genuinely great work life balance. These are things you can't buy that make a real difference.
