Brazil's New Insurance Framework Signed into Law Today marks the signing of the new legal framework for the Brazilian insurance market. Set to take effect in December 2025, this law brings significant changes: from that date onwards, insurance disputes covered by the new regulations must be resolved in Brazil. How much will professional indemnity insurance (PII) cost? This is one of the questions I often get from aspiring law firm owners. The answer? It depends. The cost of PII can vary significantly based on the area of law you practice, and the specific risks involved. For example, the risk in immigration law is typically much lower compared to conveyancing, where handling large client funds increases both the risk and the cost of insurance. If you are planning to start a law firm, your best move is to speak with an insurance broker about PII. While they may not be able to give you an exact number straight away as they would need to consider your business plan, projected turnover, and the specific risks related to both you and your practice area - they should be able to provide a useful ballpark figure based on your situation.
