Thrilled to announce that I was selected as a member of the Class of 2023 for the prestigious #millenniumfellowship ! 🚀 Launched by the United Nations Academic Impact and MCN, this semester-long program stands as a testament to the power of student leadership in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) both on campus and in communities. In the previous year, over 44,000 students from 3,000+ campuses in 119 nations applied, demonstrating the global enthusiasm for creating positive change. Remarkably, only 260+ campuses (9%) were selected to host the program, showcasing the caliber of applicants and the impact they were poised to make. I'm deeply honored and grateful for the recognition of my contributions, securing a spot in this esteemed program. Serving as the Campus Director, I led IGDTUW's cohort of 15 incredible fellows alongside my co-Campus Director, Rashika Gupta. As part of this program, we not only embarked on impactful projects but also set the foundation for future initiatives, representing our college on a global stage. My project, "Break the Bullies" aimed at combating bullying, provided a meaningful avenue to create awareness. Its key objective was to address the pervasive issue of bullying by creating awareness, providing resources, and empowering victims to stand resilient. Grounded in the UN SDGs, particularly focusing on Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities and Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, "Break the Bullies" sought to foster a safer and more inclusive environment through awareness campaigns and empowerment workshops. This experience challenged me to refine my leadership skills and find innovative solutions to social issues. Key Takeaways: 1. The program's perks were truly unmatched - mentorship from seasoned professionals, global networking opportunities, and insightful sessions with influential personalities like Malala Yousafzai, which not only inspired us but also provided invaluable lessons for our future endeavors. A heartfelt acknowledgment to MCN and our dedicated point of contact, Grace Babirye, for their unwavering support, which played a pivotal role in making our fellowship journey smooth and impactful. International Allyship Day on August 8th is dedicated to celebrate and promote allyship power in the world. Together, we recognize the importance to stand up for one another, to foster inclusivity, and to build bridges of understanding and support. Allyship is key to create inclusive cultures, and has the potential of delivering meaningful impacts to people from marginalized backgrounds, which can include better career outcomes and improved wellbeing. 8/8 is a good day to commit (or recommit) to your own individual allyship practice.  https://lnkd.in/e7D2jsTQ

Before the year draws to a close, we sat down with Jill to learn more about her role and what she gets up to outside of work. The importance of community and building a network of like-minded people who care about the same mission and are invested in its students’ successes. It’s amazing to be part of something that can change people’s lives – whether through scholarships, events, or even casual conversations. I feel fulfilled knowing that we exist to support, strengthen, grow, and create positive change where we can. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞? The variety of projects that Advancement plays a role in. When one thinks of university, Advancement is rarely something that comes to mind, but we are often on the ground floor of projects (e.g., Scholarships) that come up; not only that, but each one is different, and it makes for exciting times. It’s great to see how much of an impact Advancement has on things, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭-𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤? I love playing video games and have loved it since I was young. My favourite game– if I had to pick only one – would be Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (the Uncharted Series would be my favourite collection). Stardew Valley and Sims 3 will always have a place in my heart, though. 🎓📚 Why I'm Not Ready for Summer Holidays 🌞🏖️ As my colleagues pack their bags for well-deserved breaks, I find myself in a peculiar position: I'm not quite ready to hit pause on the academic year. Here's why: **The thrill of discovery:** Just before summer, we submitted a long-term project. Writing it up is always a home stretch, but the feeling of submission is unmatched. Another project won't be ready before my holiday, but finalizing the data analysis and discussing the storyline are equally rewarding tasks. **Mentorship:** Working with PhD candidates is incredibly rewarding. With most on holiday, the last week has been quiet, and I can't stress enough how much I miss these interactions. **Campus life:** There is something special about a university campus in summer, especially the SBE Tapijnkazerne campus. In the first week of July, the campus changed from vibrant echoes of students nervous before their master thesis defense, or relieved right afterward, to complete quiet. **Lifelong learning:** In academia, we're students as much as we are teachers. I've just started exploring BCIs and I amhooked! **Community Impact:** The DEXLab and our immersive research are gaining traction. The potential for real-world change in the Euregio is energizing – more to come after the summer! Don't get me wrong – I value holidays and time at the beach (or wherever). But right now, my work does not feel like work. "We don’t see or hear reality; we hear and see what we want to." These words came from a 9-year-old boy after a session I conducted last week. I had just wrapped up a cultural awareness session with a group of 8-9 year olds at an international school in the Netherlands. As I looked around the room, I saw the words of the boy turn into light of understanding in his classmates' eyes, those precious "aha" moments. I smiled, relieved and inspired. I had been slightly worried if kids this young would grasp the lessons I’m so passionate about sharing. Yet, their open-mindedness and curiosity were evident and genuine, even more so than what I’ve encountered in many corporate settings. This experience reinforced my belief that our education system needs more. We need to prepare children not just for academic success, but for the diverse and fast-changing world they’ll live in. Team sports, I hear you say, which are definitely important, but in society, the rules are too often not so clearly defined. It’s about teaching them to collaborate with people from different backgrounds, handle diverse perspectives, and navigate the often unclear rules of life. These skills are crucial for growth, creating opportunities, resolving conflicts, and achieving happiness. For the fifth year in a row, I stood in front of a classroom, sharing what I know. It’s a rewarding experience, seeing how my lessons ignite curiosity in these young minds. But it’s also humbling. Teaching these children shines a light on my own journey, highlighting areas where I still need to grow in open-mindedness. The saying, "If you want to learn, teach," rings true for me every time. As I continue on this path, I realize that these children are not just learning from me; I am learning from them. Together, we can make progress, one insight at a time.
