Effective and efficient port services are essential for reducing high logistics costs in Indonesia, an archipelago reliant on sea transportation. PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia (Persero) and its subholding, PT Pelindo Multi Terminal (SPMT), are at the forefront of this mission. As highlighted by SPMT Operations Director Arif Rusman Yulianto, enhancing port performance is key to lowering national logistics costs. By reducing both port and cargo stay times and focusing on the commercial aspects of port services, SPMT is committed to improving service quality for its users.
Modernizing port equipment, particularly at non-container ports, is a crucial step towards optimal port handling and reduced logistics costs. Akbar Djohan of Kadin's Logistics and Supply Chain Department emphasizes the importance of advanced equipment and efficient handling processes. By implementing modern facilities like conveyor belts and integrated warehouses, non-container ports can expedite stevedoring services, reduce dwell time, and minimize cargo losses.
The integration of SPMT’s services with the Pelindo Terminal Operation System – Multipurpose (PTOS-M) application is a significant move towards systematizing port operations. This systemization not only facilitates smoother operations but also aids in monitoring port performance, thereby lowering logistics costs. Maritime observer Saut Gurning points out that PTOS-M, integrated with the Phinnisi platform, helps streamline stevedoring activities, reducing operational costs for shipping companies.
Improving port performance also means strengthening shipping connectivity and synergic hinterland connectivity with existing port services. Addressing costs in hinterlands, which have long been a challenge for cargo owners, is another area where SPMT can make a significant impact. By selecting superior shipping operators and agents, SPMT can further enhance service quality and reduce berth times, making logistics more efficient at both national and international levels.
Together, these efforts by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia, SPMT, and other stakeholders like Kadin and maritime experts are paving the way for a more efficient and cost-effective logistics environment in Indonesia.
