Rollins faculty, for the first time, found a link between extreme temperatures and neural tube defects. “Given the urgency of climate change and nature of the results noted in our study, it is imperative to continue evaluating the impacts of extreme ambient heat on human health, particularly among vulnerable groups such as pregnant people and infants,” says Sarah LaPointe, PhD. A recent study led by Christine Ekenga, PhD, found that neighborhoods with higher levels of structural racism face a significantly greater risk of exposure to cancer-causing traffic-related air pollutants. “Similar to the ways environmental scientists study chemical exposures, we know that we are not just exposed to one societal factor at a time,” says Ekenga. “There are many ways in which racial inequalities are present in society, so it is important for scientists and policymakers to consider all of the different ways these inequalities can impact the health of communities.” Read more about the study here: https://lnkd.in/gfVJibcx
