🚨 Major Changes to Massachusetts Building Codes for Life Science Projects: What You Need to Know! 🚨 The 10th Edition of the Massachusetts Building Code and updated energy regulations are set to reshape how life science lab buildings are constructed in 2025 and beyond. 🏗️🔧 💡 Key Changes: → Increased Maximum Allowable Quantities (MAQs) will allow for more chemical usage on higher floors, offering greater flexibility in lab building design and space utilization. → New carbon reduction mandates (BERDO/BEUDO) in Boston and Cambridge require lab buildings to work toward net-zero emissions by 2050, with steep reductions required by 2035 for some. These changes will impact both new construction and renovations. These updates bring new opportunities for innovation but also complex challenges for construction firms working on life science projects. Adaptive reuse of existing buildings is amongst the best choices real estate developers can make to foster a circular built environment. It extends the lifetime of buildings, maximizes the lifecycle of materials, and capitalizes on embodied energy, among other positive social and environmental impacts. Yet, making this decision is often complex. It involves many technical uncertainties, requires extensive preliminary research, and has (perceived) limited design freedom. Therefore, demolishing and building anew can often seem more attractive.   In this paper, “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣? – 𝘼𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙘𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙖 𝙞𝙣 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙙𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨,” Brian van Laar, Hilde Remøy, Vincent Gruis and I show which criteria play a role in this complex decision-making process. We invite researchers and practitioners to unpack the dynamics of the implementation and 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 phases. While much more research is needed to ensure the future adaptability of buildings, for example, through better 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗹𝘆, our paper reveals crucial decision-making criteria already pivotal at various stages of the adaptive reuse process.   Thanks to this outstanding co-authorship team, especially to the lead author, Brian van Laar, for the heavy lifting needed to uncover these much-needed insights. Master’s Project: Designing Net-Zero Energy-Efficient Passive Solar Homes As part of my Master’s program in Construction Management at Western New England University, I worked with Professor Curt Freedman and collaborated with my teammate Ar.Avinash Ramesh ., a Registered Architect at the Council of Architecture India, to develop this project focused on designing a near net-zero energy passive solar home in Boulder, Colorado. Integrating sustainable design principles, the project highlights optimized building envelopes, renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and advanced water conservation systems. Featuring rainwater harvesting, green roofs, and energy-efficient HVAC systems, it serves as a model for eco-friendly, self-sustaining residential housing. Excited to share the publication of our latest research article titled "Design optimization of an assisted living facility to improve summer thermal comfort in warming climates," in the Journal of Building Engineering. Our study addresses the critical need for optimal summer thermal comfort in assisted living facilities in warming climates, particularly for older individuals. With higher heat-related mortality risks for older individuals, our study aims to improve indoor thermal comfort in warming climates. Based on comprehensive sensitivity analysis and optimization, our findings pinpoint key design variables for achieving improved indoor thermal comfort in extreme climates. Our study offers evidence-based insights for building engineers and designers, from layout to system variables. This article is a collective effort with Prof. Deo Prasad AO FTSE from UNSW, Mr. Taha Safi from the University of Liège, and Prof. Shady Attia from the University of Liège.
