PhD ✅ unlocked! Last week I successfully defended my doctoral thesis titled "Assessment of occupants' comfort expectations in relation to the adoption of personal environmental control systems" at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). I could not be more grateful to my supervisors Marcel Schweiker and Riklef Rambow and my boss Andreas Wagner for their guidance and support throughout this whole journey. Also Caroline Karmann for your fruitful comments and feedback. What did I do? 👉 I investigated the performance of an innovative personal ceiling fan and implemented an overall evaluation method for a type of personal environmental control system (PECS). 👉 I proposed a theoretical model to operationalize and include occupants' comfort expectations in the adaptive comfort theory. 👉 I assessed PECS technology acceptance in relation to occupants' comfort expectations. Why is this important? 🏘 We, as designers, should promote passive, low-carbon building cooling solutions (where possible) to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions. 👩👩👦👦 To achieve this, we also need to rethink our current understanding of thermal comfort by shaping occupants' expectations of what a comfortable thermal environment should be like. These topics are addressed in the thesis that will be published soon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. #energyefficiency #thermalcomfort #occupants #passivecooling #pecs #buildings
