Here is a couple frames I detailed, the customer had a mono rail crane that couldn't lift parts high enough. Important concepts regarding “𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗯-𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲” Horizontal framing elements in the substructure that link the footings play crucial roles. Structural design engineers often face conflicts related to their design and integrity when selecting the appropriate type that best suits the specific project requirements. There are three main types of horizontal link framing elements within the substructure: 1). 𝙏𝙞𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨: Tie beams, which often extend their reinforcement into the linked footing or above the footing’s top face, serve a critical function in structural design. However, opinions vary among engineers regarding their impact on differential settlement between footings. Some argue that tie beams help reduce differential section compared to the footing section further complicates this discussion. (𝗙𝗶𝗴. 𝟬𝟭) 2). 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙥 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙢: The reinforcement of such linking elements has to be firmly anchored within the footings, and it is a crucial element with significant stiffness compared to the footing it connects. This type of linking is employed to connect two different types of footings in an effort to reduce and redistribute soil pressure from non-uniform to uniform distribution. The thickness of the strap beam have to be chosen between 1.5 to 2 times the largest thickness of the footings connected to it, while the width of the strap beam has to be equal to or greater than the largest column width connected to the element. Note: The soil beneath the strap beam should not be in direct contact with the bottom of the strap beam face in order to prevent any stress transfer into the soil and to ensure correct system behavior. (𝗙𝗶𝗴. 𝟬𝟮) 3). 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙨: This type is used to carry partitions and link the column in order to decrease the unbraced length of columns, which primarily influences the buckling behavior in columns by reducing the effective column length.
