Andrew Giles MP set the tone, emphasizing the importance of tripartite collaboration, continued investment in the development of skills and rewarding people for meaningful work -Dr Sathanapaly from The Grattan Institute explored macro economics and how the valuation of work and productivity measurement in the care economy needs a different, more nuanced lens - Professor Barney Glover, fresh from his Press Club address emphasized the need for a better-connected tertiary education system to address persistent skills shortages - Workshops dived into crucial areas, including new learning models like micro-credentials, the importance of supporting traineeships at scale, the creation of culturally safe workplaces, the empowerment of people with lived experience and the needs of regional and remote communities - A thought-provoking session on the impact and opportunity of AI in the care and support sectors also underscored the transformative potential of technology, with the majority of attendees optimistic and seeking collaboration to solve sector-wide issues The day closed with Leigh Sales delivering a powerful keynote, leaving us all inspired for what's next. Yesterday I attended my first ISE Student Development Conference. The conference was rich and insightful consisting of Keynote speakers, Plenary discussions and Breakout sessions. Amazing to connect with so many early careers professionals committed to the development of the future workforce. Key takeaways 💡 🔎 The impact of generative AI and misrepresenting the aptitude of new hires 📈49% of employers agreed that graduates are career ready at the point of hire (down from 54% last year) 💼 Skills gap crisis and a stagnating graduate population. Companies are increasing their talent pools through alternative schemes such as career returners, job changers and Ex Military. 🔬Focus on becoming skills based rather than traditional role and experience, moving towards technical skills and human skills. 🧠Reoccuring theme around mental health, wellbeing and resilience. Fascinating session about prioritising happiness of the early careers population. As the out of offices get switched on I’m reflecting on what has been an incredibly eventful and rewarding year - both professionally and personally. This year, I’ve had the privilege of forging new strategic partnerships with some of the most exciting and forward-thinking institutions in higher education. It’s been a true highlight to work with brilliant teams and contribute to their success through a number of high-profile placements that will help shape the future of their organisations. I’m endlessly grateful to my clients and candidates for their trust and collaboration. On a personal note, starting my PhD in politics and literature has been a lifelong ambition come to life. Immersing myself in research while continuing to support the higher education sector has been a fulfilling act. Exploring my concept of “Crash Culture” in our politics and literature has given me new perspectives on the turbulence of our times and, in many ways, strengthened my understanding of the challenges facing institutions today. As we look to 2025, the higher education sector stands at a pivotal moment. Challenges around funding, geopolitical shifts, and the rapid evolution of technology continue to test the resilience and adaptability of institutions. Yet, as I’ve seen firsthand this year, the opportunities are just as significant. From driving innovation in teaching and research to fostering partnerships that extend beyond national borders, universities remain vital hubs of progress, creativity, and community. To all my clients, candidates, colleagues, and network: thank you for being part of this in 2024. I wish you all a wonderful Christmas, a restful holiday season, and a New Year filled with success, and maybe even some time to reflect on your own achievements. Here’s to another year of impact. I'll be speaking at ASU+GSV Summit on Tuesday, April 16 on the panel "Skills-Based Hiring is Not Just an Executive Order" STARs* have been showing up for our country every day - they represent 50% of our workforce. When major employers, state, and local governments commit to STARs, they send the message: if you can do the job, you can get the job. To date, 21 states are tearing the paper ceiling - starting with the State of Maryland's commitment to hire STARs in 2022 - opening opportunities for more than 400,000 STARs who have historically been excluded from state jobs. But tearing the paper ceiling goes beyond removing degree requirements - it means breaking down the multiple barriers STARs face at every turn as they navigate the labor market (biased algorithms, the lack of alumni networks, misperceptions, and more). *STARs = the 70 million U.S. workers skilled through alternative routes like military service, community college, partial college completion, workforce training programs, skills bootcamps, on-the-job and more, rather than a bachelor's degree.
