I had the privilege to present at the National Association Steel Pipe Distributors conference in Santa Fe on June 7, 2024. My paper, titled Significant Innovation in the Steel Industry, highlighted the impact of new technologies introduced during my time at ASEA (now known as ABB) in the 1980s. These innovations revolutionized steelmaking processes, marking a significant milestone in modernizing the industry. At ASEA, I played a key role in the introduction of these technologies to the US steel industry. They were the ASEA-SKF Ladle furnace, the DC Arc Furnace, and the Stressometer flatness control system. These innovations, born out of close collaboration between ASEA and Swedish steel producers, set new standards in steel manufacturing. The successful commercialization of these technologies paved the way for similar advancements by other steelmaking equipment manufacturers. This experience underscores the vital role of suppliers and vendors in driving innovation within industrial plants. Exciting Milestone in Shipbuilding: Keel Laying for Our First VLEC! Today, we are thrilled to announce the keel laying of the first Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC), one of nine VLECs contracted to be built in Jiangnan for our joint venture “AW Shipping” with Wanhua Chemical Group. But what exactly is keel laying? Keel laying is a significant event in the shipbuilding process, marking the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. Traditionally, it involves the placement of the central timber or steel beam that forms the backbone of the vessel. In modern shipbuilding, it signifies the first joining of modular components or the lowering of the first module into place in the building dock. This milestone not only represents the beginning of the physical construction of our VLEC but also underscores our commitment to advancing maritime logistics and services.
