DID YOU KNOW...The New York Times once rejected an opinion submission from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? King wanted his 1963 "Letter from Birmingham Jail" - one of the most important documents of the 20th century - to run in the Times. When the Times wouldn't run it, the Atlantic published it instead (https://lnkd.in/eYNNfX8f) Why do I share this? 1) Talk about a historic miss by the editors at The New York Times! 2) Getting an op-ed published isn't easy, even if you're a Nobel laureate and preeminent civil rights leader. Remember: an op-ed is one tool in the communications toolbox, but it's not the only way to get your message out. And fortunately, today, there are many ways - including your own channels - to share your perspective. Learn more about how strategic communications can help you achieve your organization's goals at goldbergcommunications.com or email me at zach@goldbergcommunications.com. #communications #strategiccommunications #mediarelations #thoughtleadership #opinion

In summary, some insights and takeaways for larger organizations and businesses: 1. Acknowledge the expertise of the much smaller indies (excellent curation, unique physical spaces, fostering local communities of readers); 2. Honor the fact that they've achieved what you haven't been able to and you've learned from them; 3. Show them respect by not competing with them; and 4. Demonstrate care by using your greater resources to help them when needed.
