The RenewCell bankruptcy is illustrative of the gap between ideas and action often present in big companies. How much are you actually prepared to do when push comes to show? How comfortable are you really with disruption? There’s a lot to unpack here, but some thoughts: 🛣️ The lack of a roadmap mentioned resonates with my experience. Before you can do anything else, you need to translate high level (and sometimes fluffy) goals to a concrete description of your desired state, and work your way backwards to figure out how to get there. 📈 The conflict between short term goals, obligations to shareholders etc., and what is best in the long term, is always present in our economy. Frankly, I think the most important thing companies need here is leadership. A leadership that can break the habit of short-termism and get its stakeholders onboard with a more long-term view. ✨There are so many ways technology helps us imagine new and better versions of the current system (in this case fashion). But of course inertia plays a role in slowing down the transition. When we price in the cost of doing nothing, and apply strong leadership and a proper roadmap, I’m convinced we will get somewhere. But it’s never going to be an overnight thing. Which means we need patient capital, patient talent, leaders etc. The wave of defaults now hitting the start-up scene is sadly a missed opportunity for many markets to accelerate their sustainability transformations. At the same time, hopefully it will also help innovators get even better att creating a system better than the current one. What do you think?

Recycled plastic prices are so low that it is now cheaper for companies to use virgin plastics in their products. For years, it was easy for companies to claim they were eco-friendly when recycled plastic was the cheaper option... But with prices flipping, companies now have to make a choice: 1. Continue using recycled plastics in the face of rising costs to hold onto their "eco-friendly" branding 2. Quietly switch over to using virgin plastics to save money

Huge congrats to all the winners at Drapers sustainable fashion awards last week. I've been lucky enough to be a judge for this for the last 3 years. The 4 key things I took from the judging process, and the conference last week.... 1. How much innovation there is from both large and small retailers and brands in the sector - the hours spent reading entries and judging were insightful, and inspiring in the hope it's given me that change is possible, and the tools are out there. 2. How much can be achieved through leading edge partnerships - change often requires new ways of thinking and often that's best achieved putting together new start-ups/tech players with more 'traditional' businesses (partnerships is how we delivered a lot of our sustainable business work at FARFETCH). 3. How much focus there is on circularity/recommerce right now - in that category there were an abundance of innovators and incumbents all either enabling or implementing change. 4. How the best entries were those where there was a crystal clear link between business benefit (in multiple guises) and environmental or social outcomes. 🌟 Reflecting on the Future of Fashion with The Textile Revolution 🌟 These days Global Fashion Summit by Global Fashion Agenda takes place in Copenhagen. In this context we had the privilege of being invited to a Round Table Discussion hosted by H&M. A discussion initiated to discuss the vision of a net positive industry. Credit to H&M for inviting a diverse range of stakeholders—including those who have critical questions - this is something not often experienced. In my mind, it is clear: The textile industry has massive social and environmental footprints negatively. To genuinely move towards sustainability, we must reduce both consumption and production, which necessitates better business models. For these new models to scale, they need to be economically viable. Therefore we need to realign incentives so that the best business practices are those with the lowest impacts (or largest positive impacts). We already see a plethora of legislation coming from the EU and we need to make sure that it is not watered down and that it provides true incentives for businesses to race towards positive impacts.
