Yesterday, I had the privilege of conducting an orientation session for the Student Parliamentarians of Holy Family Convent, Colombo 04. During the session, I shared my experiences in parliamentary processes and youth politics, aiming to inspire and equip the student parliamentarians with valuable insights. Reserve objective, expectation and reality evaluation. The draft of the constitution and reservation were discussed at length at the final stage. Finally, Articles 15 and 16 of Fundamental Rights Part 3 provide for reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes under Articles 341 and 342 for the first 10 years and review thereafter. The main intention or objective of abolition of untouchability is in relation to Article 17 abolition of untouchability, bringing the backward classes into the mainstream of the nation's society and providing them with the same opportunities for upliftment as the upper classes. For the purpose of women upliftment, provision has been made for women to get equal opportunities for development by 106th constitutional amendment in 2023 for parliament and assembly up to 33%, which is 50% in panchati Raj. Unfortunately after a decade political motives prevailed rather than impartial review and became almost permanent as the tenure increased from time to time. Because the benefit of reservation in these categories did not actually reached the ultimate beneficiary. Meanwhile, in view of the recommendations of the Mandal Commission, reservation under Article 340 was also implemented for other backward classes up to 27%, from 1989 on the occasion of achievement of political purpose.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, a champion of democracy, emphasized the importance of a truly inclusive and participatory democracy. He believed that democracy should not only be a system of governance but also a way of life that ensures social justice, equality, and dignity for all citizens. Ambedkar would likely be concerned about the erosion of democratic values and institutions. He would advocate for robust checks and balances to prevent the concentration of power in the hands of a few, and he would stress the need for accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. Ambedkar's thoughts on democracy would emphasize the empowerment of marginalized communities and the protection of minority rights within the democratic framework. He would argue that true democracy is not just about periodic elections but also about the active participation of citizens in decision-making processes and the protection of fundamental rights for all.

During Reconciliation Week, the Queensland Law Society reaffirms our commitment to reconciliation – formal, symbolic, and actual – with Australia’s First Nations People. We acknowledge the historical and ongoing effects of racism and dispossession on Australia’s First Peoples. We acknowledge the disproportionate disadvantage experienced by the First Nations of Australia within the justice system and the shameful overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island children and adults in detention and jails. We mourn the loss of First Nations’ lives in custody. We endorse the comments of Her Honour Chief Justice MacCallum of the ACT Supreme Court at her 2022 swearing-in that “No longer can we suffer the administration of justice to be the instrument of injustice”. In an election year, but more importantly, in this Reconciliation Week, Queensland Law Society calls on all elected members of parliament to urgently commit to an evidence-based, apolitical, multi-disciplinary, and non-carceral response to Closing the Gap.
