Architects should not be designing furniture!! I recently visited an office where the architects had designed all of the furniture. Visually, it was stunning, but functionally: - The desks were the wrong height. - The chairs were uncomfortable and non-adjustable. - Everything was so heavy, it required a specialised team just to rearrange the room. Perhaps in the seven years of architectural education, we could benefit from a dedicated module on ergonomics as I don’t believe we are equipped these days to design furniture. Historically, it wasn’t unusual for architects to design furniture. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, for instance, crafted every detail of his interiors, right down to the cutlery. One of my all-time favourite chairs, the Cité Chair by Jean Prouvé from the 1930s, was designed by the self-taught architect. Originally created for the student halls at the Cité Universitaire in Nancy, France, it brilliantly merges practicality, simplicity, and innovative engineering. For me, the Cité Chair is perfection—both stylish and comfortable. I’ve even had my good friend Dave Blood from the excellent Love Your Workspace prepare a quote for one! I’m saving that order for a special moment when I’ll finally add it to my home. This post marks the start of a new series where I’ll share the objects, buildings, and people that inspire me as an architect. It takes me back to my student days, flipping through the book For Inspiration Only by Jan Kaplicky—more on him in a future post! :
