Our education programme builds on 50 years of experience in driving a community-based approach to learning that prioritises the wellbeing of learners. This is now being replicated in post-conflict and fragile settings across Asia and Africa. Day 3: First Day at my Placement School. The first day meeting my tiny giants was dramatic in many ways including - the huge language barrier I was faced with, the uncertainty the children had whether to feel safe or not, the horrible classroom environment and the rain!😂 Listen to bits and pieces of the gist in the video attached but bear in mind that these three big lessons hold true for me after that first day’s experience: 1. Resilience in Adversity: Overcoming challenges like classroom conditions and unexpected rainstorms taught me resilience in no small measures. 2. Community Engagement: Living within the community and engaging with local leaders helped foster support for subsequent educational initiatives in our school. 3. Flexibility and Adaptability: Managing limited resources and cultural barriers emphasized the importance of flexibility in career pursuit. P.S - I had so much fun having this moment of reflection with my children. As a matter of fact, they mentioned things I didn’t even remember. In these days and times when technology has become the order of the day, children can hardly be found playing those interesting outdoor games we played with our friends back then like 'Suwe', building sand houses, cooking with sand and pepper, etc. These childhood activities shaped some of the essential skills we carry with us today, whether we realize it or not. And those rainy days or nighttimes when we could not go out to play, we would share our favorite stories and have a good laugh. If there's anything we would love to pass on to the next generation, it is the joy of reading and storytelling. It is the best gift we can give our children. We encourage every parent to normalize screen-free time and patronize reading books and storytelling with our kids. These activities hold more value than anything else. As we commemorate International Literacy Day in a few days, let's all join in the fight for promoting literacy in our society and it begins with YOU- mummies, daddies, guardians, teachers, and all adults. Read with your child, get them a good book to read. Every child loves to read; they just need the right book.
