University of Washington researchers led by Prof. Eleftheria Roumeli have developed new bioplastics that degrade on the same timescale as a banana peel. These bioplastics are made entirely from powdered blue-green cyanobacteria cells (spirulina). In addition, these algae-based bioplastics are machinable and have remarkable shape fidelity when making imprints.
