Smart move - this should be the key question that guides us all in interactions whether it's a patient, client, staff member or customer. Today, we celebrate "What Matters to You?" Day (WMTY) 2024. Inspired by a 2012 New England Journal of Medicine article titled "Shared Decision-Making: The Pinnacle of Patient-Centered Care," written by Michael Barry and Susan Edgman-Levitan, WMTY is intended to shift the power to the person who knows best about the help or support they need, whether it be a person with a medical issue or the clinicians or staff providing care. This international day of celebration aims to encourage and support more meaningful conversations between caregivers who provide health and social care (including family caregivers) and those they are or will care for in the future. Today, on International What Matters Most to You? Day, let's reflect on the power of shifting our approach to care. Moving from asking "What's the matter with you?" to "What matters to you?" opens doors to transformative conversations between caregivers and individuals. Prioritizing meaningful dialogues can lead to shared understanding and support, ensuring that everyone's values are respected throughout their care journey. 🏥⚕️👩🏻⚕️🩵#WhatMattersMost #HealthcareConversations #InternationalDay

Does death and dying form part of your everyday conversation? Chances are, it doesn't. But we think it should. Maddy Thomson, our consultant nurse for palliative medicine and clinical lead for end of life care, shared her thoughts on this recently at the latest TEDxWinchester event. As part of her presentation she asked the audience: "Why is it that we struggle to plan and treat our deaths as preciously as we treat our lives? How do we struggle to respect and provide consideration?" You can read more about her TEDx talk at https://lnkd.in/eK_Wyrva

On International Day of Older Persons, we celebrate the wisdom of older generations and the valuable lessons they offer. Karl Pillemer’s Legacy Project, which interviewed over 1,500 elderly individuals, highlighted key pieces of advice for a meaningful life: 1. Stop worrying 2. Pursue work you love 3. Foster meaningful relationships 4. Take responsibility for your own happiness These timeless lessons encourage us to live intentionally - focusing on joy, purpose, and connection. Australian palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware has done something remarkable. She’s taken the time to compile her patients’ viewpoints on universal subjects like regret, life purpose, and happiness; from the plethora of responses emerged five themes common to almost all of Ware’s patients. Ware assembled these reflections in her insightful book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. Read more here - https://lnkd.in/dXUMhAY
