🚨 Regional Anesthesia potentially reduces persistent opioid use after surgery and chronic post-surgical pain In our paper recently published ahead of print in Anesthesia & Analgesia, we conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that administered any regional anesthetic technique in elective noncardiac surgeries and evaluated for either persistent opioid use or chronic post-surgical pain. Not many trials assessed for persistent opioid use but our meta-analysis indicated a significant effect for long-term opioid use (RR 0.48, 95% CI 0.24 to 0.96, 5 trials, 348 pts, low quality evidence). Also, our meta-analysis revealed a significant reduction of chronic post-surgical pain up to 6 months after surgery (RR 0.72, 95% CI 0.61 to 0.85, 19 trials, 3457 pts, moderate quality of evidence). Our a priori subgroup analysis for breast surgeries did not reveal an interaction with regional anesthesia.
