Dr. Leeanna Clevenger, a general surgeon with Roper St. Francis Physician Partners, reflects on the women who have inspired her throughout her career in honor of Women in Medicine Month. "Some of the female trauma surgeons I’ve worked with are great role models because they have the ability to command the room in the trauma bay yet also are able to provide gentle and compassionate care, some while juggling life as a mother." 💪 #WIMMonth

PUBLISHED: Start a DEI Conversation in your Practice. Irrespective of a medical establishment or a non-medical establishment, DEI is essential for fostering a more just and equitable society. It not only enhances the richness of experiences and ideas but also ensures that everyone has the opportunity to succeed and contribute fully. Below is an article I wrote for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators (ASOA)'s Administrative Eyecare Journal. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are foundational principles for creating fair and vibrant communities and organizations. #DEI #ASOA #ASCRS #DIVERSITY #EQUITY #INCLUSION #OPHTHALMOLOGY #EYES

Interesting example about how to take on life as your age, staying relevant in your profession/still contributing in a positive manner to society; "This essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Dr. Joseph Maroon, an 83-year-old neurosurgeon living in Pittsburgh, about his decision to keep working at his age instead of retiring. The following has been edited for length and clarity."; https://lnkd.in/dhJD_8vM

Unveiling Clarity: A 10-Year-Old's Vision Test Success Today, a 10-year-old boy came to my clinic with his mother, who mentioned that her son frequently complained of eyeache and blurry vision, especially at a distance. When I began testing his visual acuity, something strange happened. He couldn’t even read the largest letter on the Snellen chart (6/60) with either eye. I tried pointing to other letters, but he guessed all of them wrong. Initially, I was a bit frustrated with his response, as it didn’t quite add up. I began to suspect that he might not be giving his full effort and was perhaps acting out. So, I tried a different approach. I used the POINTER STICK that I usually use to guide patients through the chart and, in a FIRM TONE, warned him, “If you guess even one letter wrong, I’ll STRIKE you with this stick! Focus and read correctly.” What happened next was almost magical- his focus sharpened immediately, and he read every letter down to the very bottom of the chart, achieving a perfect 6/6 in both eyes.😁 Sometimes, a little FIRM GUIDANCE is all it takes to help children focus and bring out their best during an eye exam. 😊 #OptometryLife #PediatricVision #EyeCare #PatientBehavior #FocusMatters #VisionHealth #SnellenChart #Optometrist #ChildEyeCare #PatientStories

Shriners Children’s is dedicated to providing the best care possible, and child life specialists play a crucial role in making that happen. Child life specialists understand how being sick or injured affects kids. They are trained to make sure young patients feel supported through their medical journey. In a special research study, “The Effects of a Video Intervention on Children’s Preoperative Anxiety and Post-Hospital Behaviors,” funded by POSNA, Natalie Chicas, MA, CCLS, child life specialist at Shriners Children’s Southern California, and Hannah Knott, Ph.D., CCLS, who is an associate professor at Azusa Pacific University and a child life specialist, demonstrated that showing a video to children about what to expect before surgery can help reduce anxiety and prevent negative behavior changes. The video was proven to significantly decrease preoperative anxiety and postoperative behavior changes in kids having outpatient surgery. And it didn’t stop there. Parents’ anxiety levels were also lowered when they saw how well their children were prepared. Learn more about the research: https://lnkd.in/gC-BKQMS Leaders in Care article: https://lnkd.in/gE3dfpYk Special thanks to Daphne Lew, PhD, MPH and Selina Poon, MD for their contributions to the study.
