Today, MEAA has written to management at Nine Publishing to commence negotiations for a freelance agreement. This marks the first direct negotiation between management and MEAA freelancers in the history of The Age, SMH, AFR, WAtoday & Brisbane Times. All publications must provide respect and dignity to the freelancers who produce so much of the public interest journalism that readers rely on. Sitting down to negotiate is an important first step to ensuring the quality jobs needed to produce quality journalism. MEAA looks forward to forming a signed agreement with Nine publishing stipulating fair rates, annual rate increases, and other key conditions for freelance contributors. Quality employers negotiate with freelancers. #fairgoforfreelancers

For so long, media freelancers - journalists, editors, photographers, cartoonists – have had little say in our pay and conditions. We have had to accept the low word rates that were offered, even when those word rates haven't increase in decades (and in many cases have actually gone backwards). We have no say in when we get paid, or even if we get paid if a piece gets spiked. We get no super, sick leave, holiday leave or any form of security. Finally, that is starting to change for the better, and it's thanks to the combined efforts of both freelancers and in-house staff, supporting each other and fighting together for a fair, equitable and sustainable media sector.

I am sad to hear of the 85 staff that have taken redundancies across Nine Publishing. Many of them are experienced, great journalists and I hope they move on to new and better roles quickly. If any of those leaving are moving into freelance work, please get in touch so we can get you connected to lists and other things you may need. But I feel this is an own goal for management and that will become evident soon. Experienced journalists make the papers work something that you can trust and senior journalists mentor younger ones. Many of these people would have probably stayed on if management had not asked for voluntary redundancies in an effort to cut jobs. If you see wages as an expense, you will always view your employees as a cost to cut. Your employees however bring value to the business and if you view them as an asset instead of an expense you will invest in them so they keep adding value to the business. Or as human beings doing amazing work to keep your papers at a standard of quality that can be trusted and depended on.
