Eye's microbiome in dry eye disease. A nice publication on the pathogeny using metagenomics and tear proteomics. As for other microbiomes and unsurprisingly, compositional and functional features of the ocular surface microbiome and the tear proteome are altered in patients with dry eye disease. Probably, a metaproteomic approach would have advantageously supplemented and clarified the information at the level of mechanisms of action. https://lnkd.in/dGeYyVHK

Innovative Lyme Disease Treatment Enters Human Safety Trials This spring marks the commencement of a significant milestone in Lyme disease treatment as Professor Kim Lewis's team at Northeastern University progresses to human safety trials for a novel antibiotic, hygromycin A, in Australia. This groundbreaking research follows successful outcomes in animal studies, where hygromycin A demonstrated no toxicity and effectively cleared Lyme disease in mice. The anticipation builds as the medical and scientific communities await results by fall, hoping for positive outcomes that could revolutionize Lyme disease treatment. "Hopefully, the results will be positive," comments Lewis, University Distinguished Professor of Biology, reflecting the optimism surrounding this promising therapeutic agent. The success of these trials could pave the way for a new standard in Lyme disease treatment, underscoring the importance of innovation and persistence in medical research. #LymeDisease #MedicalInnovation #PublicHealth #NortheasternUniversity #ResearchAndDevelopment #HygromycinA

A huge honor being part of the 7th edition of the fabulous and reknown “Rose and Mackay Textbook of Autoimmune Diseases” edited by Eric Gershwin George Tsokos and Betty Diamond. We are delighted and very thankful being invited by the editors ! Together with Daniel Prof. Dr. med Franzen, MD, MHBA, FCCP and Jakob Nilsson it was an immense pleasure to write the chapter on sarcoidosis, a systemic inflammatory disease, characterised by granuloma formation. No need to say but what is the Rose and Mackay Textbook of Autoimmune Diseases famous for? “a valuable resource to clinicians involved in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune disease, as well as to scientists who want to follow developments in the field.” “comprehensive reference that emphasizes the "3 P’s" of 21st Century medicine: precision, prediction, and prevention” Here is the link: https://lnkd.in/d785d6pQ Together we also wrote a comprehensive review on the topic published in Swiss Medical Weekly, found here: https://lnkd.in/dUvQnbR2 #autoimmunity #immuneregulation #precisionmedicine #preventivemedicine

June 19 is World Sickle Cell Day. This international awareness day is observed annually with the goal to increase public knowledge and an understanding of sickle cell disease, and the challenges experienced by patients and their families and caregivers. Housed on the CodeX HL7® FHIR® Accelerator, GenomeX is focused on strengthening the exchange and use of genetic data across healthcare and research organizations through the real-world implementation and testing with our industry members to enable appropriate data to be transmitted and stored in electronic health records, enabling clinical care and research. World DNA Day is an annual, global celebration of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure. This year is the 70th anniversary. It was on this day, in 1953, that Watson and Crick, with the precious contribution of Rosalind Franklin, described the structure of DNA and its double helix. Thanks to this discovery, GENinCode tests now provide information about inherited conditions, disease diagnosis and improved risk assessment in cardiovascular disease. Our tests are designed to help physicians make improved clinical decisions. With comprehensive genetic risk assessment, we are able to stratify patients at most risk and identify personalised treatment to prevent cardiovascular disease. The GENinCode preventative cardiology approach is now being applied to healthcare systems across the US, UK and Europe to advance preventative care, deliver efficient resource management and improve outcomes. #dnaworldday #dna #genetics #science #health #earlydetectionsaveslives #genincode #cardioincode #lipidincode #thromboincode

The gut microbiome has become an essential indicator of health and disease among humans. It represents a set of ecologically intricate interactions with small perturbations resulting in dramatic shifts in the overall composition and leading to dysbiosis. Changes to stable microbial communities within the gut have been implicated in a wide range of metabolic disorders. As a result, it becomes crucial to understand the functional dynamics of both the individual members and the underlying interactions between members. Advances in meta-omics approaches, including taxonomic characterization through metagenomics and functional (expression) characterization of transcriptomes through meta transcriptomics, have tremendously increased our understanding of the gut microbiome and its interactions with the human host. Join us for a webinar featuring Jordan Bisanz (Pennsylvania State University), Jean Macklaim (Diversigen), and Ivan Vujkovic-Cvijin (Cedars-Sinai), who will share advances on the use of meta-omics approaches to study the gut microbiome in the context of human health and disease. Registration is free, the discussion starts July 29, 12:00 pm ET. https://hubs.ly/Q02HMzcx0
