💚 7 years on, yet still no real accountability - the Grenfell Tower fire was an absolute tragedy, the delay in answers is an absolute travesty. The fire that engulfed the tower should have been contained within the flat of origin, the fire should have been fought and deaths should have been avoided. Instead, 72 innocent people lost their lives due to failings by numerous stakeholders - the local borough Council, the emergency services, contractors, material manufacturers, landlords, the list goes on. We've had new legislation and building control measures introduced since the tragedy and those within the construction industry have a renewed and rightful focus on fire safety. We must still do better, we must not let such a tragedy happen again. It's the least we owe to those that lost their lives. To those that remain, they at least deserve an apology, fair treatment and the answers that they so desperately seek. 7 years on, we remember Grenfell. 💚 #Justice4Grenfell #buildingsafety #firesafety #cladding #higherriskbuildings #construction #compliance #buildingregulations #buildingsafetyact #rememberingthe72 #grenfelltower

Today, we remember every individual life that was lost in the Grenfell Tower fire. We remember the survivors and their families whose lives were changed forever on that night seven years ago. We remember the eighteen children who will never grow up to live their lives to the full, to laugh with their friends, leave school, fall in love, get married and have children of their own. We remember the families for whom there will always be an empty space at the table. We remember the residents who protected their neighbours unable to evacuate, fighting the flames and finally losing their lives as a result. We remember the future generations who will now never be born. We remember that this was the UK's worst residential fire since WW2 and took place in the centre of London. We also remember the words in the final statement of Richard Millet KC, counsel to the Grenfell Tower Inquiry: “Each and every one of the deaths that occurred in Grenfell Tower on the 14th June 2017 was avoidable” #housing #property #safety #bsr #hse #firesafety #fireriskassessment #firetraining #firesafetymanagement #socialhousing #localgovernment #localauthorities #lga #disabled #disabledinclusion #grenfell #properties #buildingsafety #buildingsafetyact #highrisebuildings #training #building #housingassociations #housing #fireandrescue #peers #nfcc #ehrc #frs #buildingcontrol

Chief Greg Rogers, an established fire safety code expert and the current chair of the IAFC's Fire & Life Safety Section (FLSS), recently contributed to a timely article from the National Fire Protection Association. In this article, titled “Single Stair, Many Questions,” Chief Rogers shared his personal experience with recent legislative changes related to residential stairwell safety codes. He shared his and his colleagues’ perspectives on the issue and offered professional insight on the potential impact of these changes on both civilian and firefighter safety. The issue of stairwell safety in high-rise buildings has never been more urgent than it is now. On one side of the issue, we see private entities – for and non-profit alike – pushing regulatory bodies to allow single-exit stairwells in ever-taller residential buildings. On the other side are firefighters, safety experts, and the organizations that serve them. These stakeholders urge lawmakers to take a cautious approach when considering the issue, and they almost unilaterally oppose the allowance of single-exit stairwells (as opposed to multiple) in buildings over 4 or 5 stories. You can read the NFPA's article below. The IAFC is truly grateful for the expertise and passion of members like Chief Rogers, and we hope you will add your own voices to this ongoing debate.

Today marks the seventh anniversary of the Grenfell Tower Fire. The tragedy that took 72 lives is a stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of neglecting safety standards. As building surveyors, we have a crucial role in ensuring such a disaster never happens again. Building safety is more than a checklist—it's a moral imperative. Every decision, every inspection, and every approval must prioritise the wellbeing of the people who live and work in these structures. Since Grenfell, there has been progress, but not nearly enough. Too many buildings still fall short of basic safety requirements, and too many lives remain at risk. We are dedicated to leading the charge for higher standards and greater accountability. We advocate for comprehensive risk assessments, the use of non-combustible materials, and rigorous enforcement of safety regulations. Our mission is to create a culture where safety is embedded in every phase of the building process, from design to construction to maintenance. We want to create a future where tragedies like Grenfell are not just unthinkable but impossible. #GrenfellTower #BuildingSafety #FireSafety #Surveyors #Surveying #Horde #construction #residential #property #realestate #towerblock #landlord #tenant #council #estateagent #developer #development #news #new #anniversary #insurance #finance #socialhousing #repairs #maintenance #fire #housingmarket #propertymarket #highrisebuilding #government #election #generalelection #manifesto #housingpolicies #housing #policies #policy #safety #london #hampshire #southampton #southeastengland #southernengland

Rydon, the main contractor for Grenfell Tower's refurbishment, has spent over £19 million on fire safety remediation work. This includes addressing issues in 500 apartment properties up to September 30, 2023. Their losses soared to £9.1 million, nearly doubling from the previous year's £5.9 million loss, largely due to these costs. They have set aside £26.7 million for a settlement with Grenfell Tower fire victims, part of a reported £150 million settlement. Ongoing discussions with additional affected parties, fire service, and police have provisions of £13.4 million. Turnover decreased to £47.5 million from £52 million the previous year, with the cash position dropping to £1.1 million from £3.7 million. Rydon cites inflation, the effects of the war, high material costs, labour shortages, and declining consumer confidence as factors impacting their finances. The company ceased operating as a design and build contractor in 2020/21, focusing solely on remedial works thereafter. #fire #firesafetynews #fireservice #fireremedialworks #fireprotection #firesafety #fireregulations

The recent fire at a construction site in Vancouver’s Dunbar neighborhood is a reminder of the importance of fire safety in high-density urban environments. While the cause is still under investigation, the event demonstrated how quickly fire can spread from a construction site to nearby homes, causing significant disruption to the community. We must continue to reinforce construction site safety measures. Proactive fire prevention strategies, early installation of fire suppression systems, and secure site perimeters are essential to protecting both construction workers and the surrounding community. By working together with city planners, developers, and residents, we can strengthen our fire safety protocols and reduce the risks that come with building in densely populated areas. #FireSafety #ConstructionSafety #CommunityRiskReduction #FirePrevention #FireProtection #UrbanSafety #BuildingSafety #PublicSafety Check out my blog post https://wix.to/Sr2MTVq #newblogpost

✳️ WHEN WILL IT END?!? ‘ A housing minister has warned “far too many” buildings remain unsafe, with work to remove dangerous cladding yet to begin at almost 50% of monitored properties. Lord Khan of Burnley said there is a need to “go further, faster” as he told peers that remediation work has not started at 2,415 residential buildings 11 metres and over in height in England…’ As someone who helps many clients to remediate buildings, I agree with the statements above. The scale of the challenge is immense but not insurmountable. Whilst remediation work progresses we must ensure temporary measures are in place to protect the safety of residents Credit- NewsBreak #Safety #BuildingSafety #Fire #Greenville #ResidentialBuildings #11Metres #England #Height #Remediation #Residence #Landlord #Leaseholders https://lnkd.in/eb_Wt4g6
