If you are an employer struggling to attract qualified civilian candidates because of a lower than average pay range, looking to military Veteran candidates as a solution instead of running a comp analysis & raising your pay range to market value devalues the unique experience and skills Veterans bring to the table. 📢 If you want to attract Veterans successfully, do it by offering competitive wages, good benefits, and a support system for them post military through mentorship and resources in your organization to SHOW you value their experiences and are an employer of choice. I wanted to take a moment to share some insights I've gathered over the years, particularly concerning the transition from military to civilian life and the unique challenges it presents. One of the key aspects I've found crucial in navigating military transition successfully is having mentors and leaders who understand both worlds fluently. They can bridge the gap and provide invaluable guidance on career progression and professional development. In the military, certain behaviors and attitudes are not only acceptable but often encouraged, whereas in the civilian world, they may lead to adverse consequences, including termination or hindered career advancement. I experienced this firsthand in my transition period from the Marine Corps. Fortunately, early in my civilian career, I received invaluable advice from one of the partners of the firm I worked at who recognized my potential but also understood the need for adaptation. They emphasized that while my military background was commendable, it wouldn't necessarily propel me to the heights I aspired to reach in the corporate world. Their wisdom led me to invest in personal development, including working with a life coach. It was a humbling experience, but one that has paid dividends ever since. There are a lot of Veterans that are too proud to open up and listen or have an attitude “they just don’t understand”. I firmly believe that fostering mentorship relationships between individuals with military and civilian backgrounds can greatly benefit both parties. Veterans bring unique skills, experiences, and perspectives that can enrich any organization, while civilian mentors provide guidance on navigating corporate cultures and advancing professionally. I think having Veterans in key leadership roles can help organizations be “Veteran Ready” by bridging the gap. They can talk to the new Veterans in the organization with an “I understand your perspective” but if you're open let me share the other side and let me help you navigate these waters to help you achieve what you are capable of. I'm grateful for the mentorship I've received, and I'm committed to paying it forward by offering support and guidance to others making similar transitions. This is just my perspective on the topic and as always open to connecting to support all Veterans.
42% of US Veterans leave their first civilian job in a year - 80% leave after two. These numbers need to change. It is time for businesses to not just be "military friendly", but military ready. 💼 It is critical for businesses and leaders to understand this difference, in order to ensure members of the military a smooth transition into civilian life. 🇺🇸 This article was written by Jonathan Fermin-Robbins, an Advisor to Military Connected, and has been featured in Yahoo News. Military Jargon: Breaking Down the Barriers Have you ever found yourself puzzled by military speak? 🤔 It's not uncommon for civilian employers to feel bewildered by the jargon Veterans use during interviews or on their CVs. (Service leavers and veterans take note, you need to adapt!) From "Orders of the Day" to "PPE" (Personal Protective Equipment), these terms can leave recruiters scratching their heads. Take for example, the term "Overhead" - in the military, it often means air support, but in a business context, it's all about expenses. Such differences can sometimes create obstacles to understanding a Veteran's true skills and experience. Understanding these terms is crucial not just for communication, but for appreciating the unique skills Veterans bring to civilian roles. As Veterans adapt to the civilian workforce, it's equally important for employers to bridge this gap. This mutual understanding can pave the way for successful partnerships and a more diversified workforce. Have you encountered any military jargon that left you confused? Taken from a fellow Veteran who attended a work convention for her component… “18 million people apply for a position on USA Jobs a year and only 250 thousand people are hired annually.” I guess the real question is, do you have a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in your corner? Why is having a SME regarding USAJOBS in your corner important? Well, by learning from someone else’s experience, you have an opportunity to make less mistakes, focus on what is relevant, and to learn about upwardly mobile positions that you had no idea existed. Just ask the many transitioning Service Members, Veterans, and Military Spouses that received some sort of consultation or job lead from yours truly. Their results speak for themselves. #MilitaryMentorship #VeternsHelpingVeterans #FederalEmployment
