Metal Roofs are Stylish! Today’s metal roofs are a far cry from the corrugated tin barns of the bucolic past—indeed, now you can choose from tin, zinc, aluminum, copper, or galvanized steel, in a dizzying array of colors, finishes, and even shapes! Their variety surpasses that of the much more conventional asphalt shingle. While asphalt might offer 15 to 20 color choices, modern metal roofing comes in more than 100 different colors, including standard, premium, and custom hues. Steel and aluminum, the two most common metals used in residential roofing, are both designed to hold paint finishes well. Seven out of 10 homeowners living under metal roofs designed theirs with the traditional vertical ribbed panels or “standing seam” construction, but metal roofing is not short on style options either. The metal doesn’t have to stand out like a sore thumb to do its job; rather, it can mimic nearly any look using multiple-layer factory finishes that ensure that the appearance is not only beautiful but long-lasting and durable.

This is a classic example of what NOT to do. I see this time and time again when properties want to paint over their problems. Facilities probably became frustrated with the floor looking consistently dirty so they painted over it instead. What you need to consider is the frequent foot traffic that will take that paint/sealer off exposing what is underneath. In this case, the building should either budget for a routine maintenance clean, put placemats down the middle, or just have a solid concrete floor. The type of flooring this building has now has a lot of grooves and pits that will trap dirt and soil quickly, which is the reason why they wanted to paint over it. Don't do this.

When are support columns that are rated as "temporary" or "not for permanent use" okay to use? These types of columns (hollow steel columns with a removable pin) are often called out in a home inspection report. While the presence of these types of columns suggests a non-standard or insufficient repair, sometimes they are acceptable. When are the acceptable? Well, they are acceptable when they are use for a temporary application, of course. But also if they are only added to improve minor conditions such as to take the bounce or squeak out of a flooring, or in this case, to take a bit of the belly out of a sagging floor system in an old house. It can be hard to distinguish if they are structurally necessary as compared to simply improving conditions - so look closely for damage and also determine if there is a fundamental span issue. #structuralinspection #structuralengineer #structalk #lallycolumns #jackposts #floorslope #rowhouse #foundation #advancedstructuralassessment

The Dawn of Roofing: Early Innovations The concept of roofing is as old as human civilization itself. Early humans, driven by the primal need for shelter, devised rudimentary roofs using available materials: 🔸40,000 BC: Wooly mammoth skins and other animal hides were the primary materials for protection against the harsh elements. 🔸25-30,000 BC: The advent of tent-like structures saw the use of reeds, which were subsequently layered with mud, offering a semblance of a roof. 🔸8,000 BC: As architectural designs evolved, mud and clay houses with conical roofs made of mud and branches became prevalent. 🔸6,500 BC: A significant shift occurred with the introduction of rectangular houses, boasting roofs crafted from bricks or stones. ⤵️Tap on the picture link below to learn more about "A Comprehensive History of Roofing: From Ancient Times to Modern Innovations" 👉🏾Follow for more roofing value. 💡Too much information to remember, right?
