Creating Spaces for Empowered Women | TEDx Speaker | Diversity Trainer & Researcher | Tourism & Hospitality
I judge a city based on its book stores. Yes, I really do. I have traveled a fare share, and in all the cities I have been to, I might miss out on seeing that popular tourist spot, but I never miss on checking out their bookstore(s). Why you ask? Because in a age where everything is being digitised, the book stores tell you where people of the city are and where they will go. It tells you what people of the city are reading. is it fiction? is it non fiction? how is the gender representation of authors of books being sold? how diverse are the topics for children? what are the people teaching their children? how representative are children's books? It tells you how people are thinking (or not thinking). are the books updated? are the shelves clean? are the 'top reads' actually being read? are recent books available? how is the variety of children's books? It tells you how much time people spend in the bookstore. is there a cafe? what are the timings? are the books open for reading? or are they plastic sealed and you can read only when you buy? what is your cafe serving? how loud is your music? do you have stationery? Bookstores are VERY representative of the population, and as a gender researcher who is a nerd at heart - book stores are my favorite place to do people study. I know Vikas Dua has an on going series on people study (Overheard in metro). But im curious to know - Where do you observe people? #diversiTea
