As I have just concluded my last day at the organization where I worked for 20 plus years, here are three thoughts related to changing jobs as a more seasoned adult: 1. Many of us are scared to try to make a change or even consider one. Who said that adults can’t have hopes or dreams? Nobody. There is safety in what we know, but opportunity and hope in what we have yet to consider. 2. There is value in authenticity. Being our true selves takes less energy, and also ensures that when we meet someone else, there is no pretense about who we are. We each want to work where we can be accepted as we are. We then do better work, too. Potential employers should experience who we are, so that they can also make an informed choice. 3. It’s ok to know who you are, and be honest about it. Many of us aren’t thrilled being boastful, but if you think you’re the right person for a job, let the hiring manager know why. Leverage your experience, and be your own agent.

When I lost my job, my self-worth fell through the floor. My confidence dropped to a new low. As a contributing member of society, the center of identity lost its footing. What I do as a vocation is a big part of my identity. I know what others may say... "You are more than what you do for work." But that is not how I felt when I lost my job. So much of who I am is based on what I do. I am a father, husband, meditator, teacher, mentor, coach, author, provider, and leader. These are things I do. When the role disappears, I struggle to hold on to who I am. I found ways to stabilize my life after a job loss. 1. Routine keeps me from dropping into a pit of low self-worth and negative self-talk. 2. I stay close to my crew - the people who tell me the truth and kick me in the butt when I need it. 3. I avoid too much sympathy. It feels good - for a minute - but I need strong shoulders to carry me when I fall and pointed words to get me going when I want to quit. If you have lost your job, I understand. Get with your crew, lean into your routines, and seek mentors who will give you what you need, not what you want. If I survived, so can you. You got this. Every day I pass this field on my way to work. Today it had a layer of fog covering the grass. The sky lit up with an array of colors. The birds chirping, the perfect picture but, If I did not take action pull my camera out take the picture. Then there would be nothing to talk about. This got my gears turning. You have to take action to get the results you want. I asked myself what do I want. What resources do I have. Where can I position myself so that I have the best results. I got to my desk sat down. Started my day as usual. I checked in with my drivers asked how their day was an maintained operations that’s how it goes right? Well What’s next? How do I keep moving forward? How do I find the next opportunity? Sometimes you take a risk and nothing happens. Sometimes there’s no change. Then tomorrow comes around and that risk you took yesterday becomes an opportunity for today. This leads to meeting new people, making new connections and getting closer to the end goal. Don’t sell yourself short, Always double back, there will always come a time when it’s your turn. You have to know that sometimes things aren’t what they seem and then other times your right on the money. So when you see it just know when to take it.

Do some people seem to have all the luck? Opening doors of opportunity at will? There's actually a way to harness it. There are 4 types of luck. And one of them beats the rest... ☘️ Dumb Luck - Pure coincidence. Right place at the right time. Finding a $100 dollar bill on the street. ☘️ Diligent Luck - Putting in the work, hustling, and stirring things up. ☘️ Observant Luck - Being able to spot trends or pick winners. Buying stock in a new company, knowing they're going to be huge. But the best kind of luck? ☘️ Signature Luck - The luck that comes to you as a direct result of your unique personal brand. Your ability to be top of mind when someone has an opportunity. A reputation as being reliable, trusted, charismatic and having integrity. People WANT to work with you. This is the true meaning of the phrase, "I make my own luck." With so few people investing the time and energy to create Signature Luck, the opportunity to stand out is amplified that much more. Work on your Signature Luck and watch doors start to open for you.

My biggest career regret... For 6 years I worked for a luxury gym chain in Manhattan. Our average member's annual income was $250k (it's probably even higher now). Plenty of multi-millionaires and executives on the gym floor every day. Every day I was surrounded by highly successful people. Leaps and bounds ahead of me in their careers and finances. But I was a young, dumb 20-something who thought he had it all figured out. I'd found my calling and was going to be in personal training the rest of my life. Why would I want a "real" job? In retrospect, I was swimming in opportunities to learn and network. The countless life lessons I could have gained had I cared to ask. The potential doors that could have been opened. Cheesy saying that holds true: Your network is your net-worth. Especially in this current job economy. Submitting a resume isn't enough anymore. You have to be your own sales person. Cold calling, emailing, and DMing recruiters and hiring managers. Just to get some eyes on your resume. Might not even get you the job. Not trying to be all doom and gloom here. My point is to seize every chance you get to build a genuine connection. You never know what you might learn or when it may help you get your foot in the door. Could be someone you meet at school or your current job. Could be striking up a conversation with a stranger at the airport or a bar. If you are job searching, don't be afraid to reach out to people at the companies you apply to. So many are more than willing to give you 15 minutes of their time to answer questions and see if you're someone they'd be open to refer. P.s. I'm always happy to make time. You may me down because of the situation you might be into. You have been laid off or not getting a job offer or maybe you are not clear where your life or career is moving into. But at this time also, you need to keep yourself calm and just take a couple of deep breaths and then think that maybe this is what GOD wants it or this is just GOD's way to test your patience. Also, you may be in bad situation now but this shall also pass and flowers will bloom. You just need to be a little patient, stay focused and keep moving towards your goal that can be anything like securing a job, starting or growing your business or it could be even learning another tool or skill. You just need to move in the right direction and there will be light at the end of tunnel. If you’ve been fired or laid off and your income is low, don’t believe the lie of “That’s all you’re worth.” You are invaluable. It’s time to start looking for a new job that reflects that. Instead of sending endless resumes, start connecting with people who can open doors to new opportunities.
