Amazon has removed it a just walk out tech and replaced it with DASHCART smart shopping carts that still allow customers to skip the checkout line. However the customer has to scan each item unlike the old tech which was done by cameras and human associated monitoring the video. It is clear Amazon wasn’t able to roll out the old tech to other grocery chains because of its expense. The new carts don’t require retrofitting stores since they are stand alone tech. It still collects data on the purchases and doesn’t require additional labour to monitor since the customer has to scan the goods. Even self checkout hasn’t turned out to be a time saver for consumers when you need to find the code for the fresh produce. #amazon #justwalkout #selfcheckout #grocery #technology

🤦♂️ .... Is it AI or "Flinstones"? Just over half of Amazon Fresh stores are equipped with Just Walk Out. The technology allows customers to skip checkout altogether by scanning a QR code when they enter the store. Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped. Instead, Amazon is moving towards Dash Carts, a scanner and screen are embedded in your shopping cart, allowing you to checkout as you shop. These offer a more reliable solution than Just Walk Out, whose impressive technology was truly ahead of its time. The press has titled this news with a very negative intention, but in reality, it should be seen as pivoting or adjusting as #Amazon continues to experiment and innovate. Amazon is making adjustments in its grocery stores, moving away from the "Just Walk Out" technology. WHY? Accuracy and cost are challenges, as Amazon relies on cameras and sensors to track purchases. Why hasn’t ‘JUST WALK OUT’ technology caught on? I am a fan of ‘just walk out’. I like it because it solves a problem. I like it because it has the power to transform town high streets and create a boom in new store openings and formats. I accept that running a system like JWO in a store the size of a supermarket would be impractical. But think of it from the perspective of an independent/convenience store/limited range store format. Two of the biggest costs for retailers are staff and theft. JWO significantly reduces both. When margins are typically 3-5% after costs, the benefits of a reduced wage and shrinkage bill are significant. JWO would allow small, independent retailers to stay open longer, offering more convenience to customers. JWO allows staff to focus on replenishment and stock rotation, and frees up time to actually offer better assistance to customers. The extra time & money released by JWO would allow independent retailers to expand, to actively manage more than one store, saves money of theft and security guards, and to offers customers a more local and relevant range. If the costs of installing and operating JWO were less than paying one or two full time members of staff, this system would save retailers money. JWO could allow independent retailers to reduce prices, making them more competitive with supermarkets, increasing convenience, funding marketing, driving footfall and sales. I have said (numerous times) that Amazon should find a way to make this technology available for less than the cost of two full time shop workers. Doing so would make the economics obvious to every independent retailer (food or non-food). Participating in JWO should immediately list every product instore on Amazon Marketplace, making them available to every Amazon customer, with food items listed on a sperate ‘Amazon Food Local’ section on Marketplace. Amazon already has a huge delivery network. When a customer places an order the nearest delivery van could be diverted to collect the order and either deliver it directly to door, or return it to the warehouse for next day delivery elsewhere. Making JWO affordable for retailers would allow Amazon to create a virtual network of food (and other) retailers, creating a massive foothold in physical retail, without the cost of buying/leasing, fitting out or operating stores. Amazon could also become a wholesaler into the JWO stores further reducing retailer costs and building its own margin. Participating stores could also be used as micro-distribution centres for best selling Amazon items, and as collection/return points. My view is affordable JWO is how Amazon finally become good at Grocery and becomes the biggest digital and physical retailer/wholesaler in the world. Highlights: Amazon will remove its “Just Walk Out” technology at Amazon Fresh grocery stores in the U.S., which charged shoppers automatically without a cashier. Amazon Fresh stores will instead use Dash Carts, which allows customers to use their carts to scan items while shopping, according to a company spokesperson. The Dash Cart technology, which is already used in some Fresh stores, doesn’t require shoppers to interact with a cashier. There are currently 44 Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., 27 of which use the “Just Walk Out” technology, the company said. The decision to remove the technology was earlier reported by the Information. It will still be used at the convenience-store style Amazon Go locations, as well as at smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. and some third-party retailers. Amazon has once again confirmed that AI technology is well-suited for convenience stores: “Hoggett, a three-decade veteran of British retail giant Tesco who joined Amazon in 2022, said Just Walk Out makes sense in smaller shops where customers are purchasing a few items but isn’t ideal for larger grocery stores like Fresh.”. However, there is currently much buzz in the media. The Information recently revealed an article about Amazon Fresh stores in the US, which has been followed by numerous clickbait articles. Amazon has decided to remove the Just Walk Out technology from hypermarkets in the US, specifically huge stores ranging from 3500 to 4500 square meters, where the technology was installed and the customer experience was suboptimal at best. Another quote from Tony Hoggett: “With Just Walk Out, Amazon emails receipts to customers after they leave the store, a process that can take minutes or hours, potentially making budget-conscious shoppers uneasy.“ - yes, Amazon, in today's world, nobody wants to receive a receipt hours later. And nobody wants to download apps to buy a sandwich. That's why other companies have developed real-time technologies. The Just Walk Out will remain in Amazon Go stores in the US and Amazon Fresh stores in the UK: "The spokesperson added that Amazon plans to keep Just Walk Out in smaller-format Fresh stores in the U.K. The technology also still features in Amazon’s 22 Go convenience stores, though the company closed nine of those stores last year." Amazon removed the technology from 20 huge stores in the US, but it remains in 40 convenience stores and smaller supermarkets in the UK and the US. This situation illustrates that was too early to install relatively new technology in the most complex stores, with thousands of square meters, tens of thousands of SKUs, and where customer experience was far from the best. Good to read the Amazon Go format (with Just-Walk-Out technology) is still going strong - I loved the experience in their first store in 2018 and still see plenty of traction of this small footprint convenience format around the world. 6moFor customers this is basically self-checkout on wheels- not really a convenience... BUT: That extra personal labour gives Amazon some crazy-rare IRL shopper insights: 'added to cart' 'removed from cart' 'movement through store' 'paused at advertising' 'time spent shopping'... Pair that data with the ability to dynamically price and offer discounts to 'nudge' shoppers while they shop, and the grocery store will become more like the internet. Not sure I like it.
