I often call the energy transition the biggest purchase order in the history of the mining industry. Indeed, we have never mined and produced the quantity of metals and minerals which are needed to meet our decarbonisation goals. The International Energy Agency (IEA) has even forecast that to hit net-zero globally by 2050, the world would require six times more mineral inputs in 2040 than today. This demand is across the board – copper, cobalt, nickel, lithium – as these minerals and metals are all critical components in renewable energy technologies and EVs. The opportunity this demand creates for the mining industry is unprecedented. And while we must take advantage of this opportunity, we must also continue to adopt best practices and facilitate a ‘race to the top’, to ensure we meet this demand sustainably and responsibly.

Copper plays a pivotal role in renewable energy projects like solar PV, onshore wind. Notably, offshore wind demands approximately 8,000 kilograms of copper per megawatt of energy. As the world shifts to renewables, the quest for resources, especially copper, gains paramount importance.
