In honor of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, I am sharing an article highlighting the ongoing importance of advancing LGBTQ+ rights in business leadership. Despite progress, challenges persist globally, emphasizing the need for continued advocacy. Businesses benefit from inclusive policies that enhance engagement and retention, making a commitment to equality crucial. #LGBTQ+ #Equality #BusinessLeadership #IDAHOTB #Inclusion #Diversity

Source: Harvard Business Review From the article: "With governments and international blocs in retreat, where can LGBTQ+ employees turn to for support? The not-so-obvious answer is global companies. Looking back on what has driven dramatic gains in the life prospects of LGBTQ+ people over the last 20 years, legislative action and culture shifts have been important, but center stage have been multinational corporations." #LGBT #LGBTQ #Employment, #Employees #Employers #Companies #Business #Pride

Over the last 20 years, there have been dramatic gains for LGBTQ+ rights in the U.S.: gay, queer, and trans individuals fought for and won equal treatment at work, legal marriage, the freedom to raise children, and the ability to openly serve in the military, and more. But now, many of these new-won rights are at risk. Many countries (mostly in the Middle East and Africa) continue to brutally repress LGBTQ+ individuals. In the U.S., a record number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in State capitols in 2023. With governments and international blocs in retreat, where can LGBTQ+ employees turn to for support? Global companies. It’s in companies’ best interest for them to continue to stay committed to LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms. #LGBTQRights

We're here. We're queer. We're not going anywhere. Efforts to roll back LGBTQ+ rights and visibility not only hurt our community, but all marginalized communities. From a societal standpoint, this is unconscionable. From an economic standpoint, it's simply stupid and bad business. According to this article, companies are - and should - be standing strong in their DEI efforts, not buckling to political pressure. If it's true, that's good. The authors note that "rainbow capitalism" has a positive effect, which may be true in terms of more diverse hiring practices. I'm a bit uncomfortable with that term, though, as I would argue that "rainbow capitalism" connotes performative allyship - even the Wikipedia link that the article references states as such. As we head into Pride month, it's important to be aware of which companies are standing strong in their commitments to the LGBTQ+ community, how they are doing so, and which are not. #lgbtqia+ #lgbtq+ #dei

As Pride season unfolds, discussions around corporate engagement with LGBTQ+ rights inevitably resurface. My latest piece for Council on Foreign Relations's Think Global Health examines the complex relationship between the #alcohol industry and Pride parades worldwide. With alcohol companies increasingly sponsoring #Pride marches and parades, I explore the potential implications of this form of marketing for the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in light of well-documented health disparities in alcohol consumption. I propose some short- and long-term solutions to address this form of alcohol marketing and its potential harmful impacts, while safeguarding the integrity of Pride events. Good morning and happy Monday! Today I am happy to share this article published on Harvard Business Review . Things aren't great for the LGBTIQ+ communities right now and we need support and real allies. Global companies must recommit to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, not only because morally is the right thing to do, but also because it's good for business! Learn here why companies must recommit to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights: 1. When LGBTQ+ employees feel comfortable being “out” at work, engagement and retention rates are much higher. 2. Gen Z is the future workforce and a significant proportion (25%) identify as LGBTQ+. This group is actively seeking to work for companies that are queer friendly. 3. Workplace equity and inclusion policies benefit ALL employees. Click here, read the article and learn more! #Diversity #Inclusion #Pride #PrideMonth #LGBTQ https://cogniz.at/4c3dnIC

Join me and an excellent group of experts this Wednesday for a very important conversation! Are LGBTQ+ Rights Losing Ground? Columbus Metropolitan Club Lynn Greer Legacy in Civic Engagement Forum Celebrating Inclusion & Equity for the LGBTQ Community Wednesday, October 9, 2024 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm | Vue Columbus, 95 Liberty Street, Columbus OH ABOUT THE FORUM: An erosion of LGBTQ+ rights could be the latest casualty of America's deepening political and cultural polarization. With a laundry list of anti-LGBTQ+ bills piling up in the Ohio statehouse and some employers dropping corporate DEI initiatives, are efforts to safeguard and grow LGBTQ+ rights losing ground in Ohio? Polling research announced earlier this year by nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute also disturbingly showed US public support for LGBTQ+ protections falling for first time since 2015, illustrating the dangers of taking newly won freedoms for granted. With a panel of experts, we take stock of the state and trajectory of LGBTQ+ rights in Ohio and look at what the post-election environment may hold in store for LGBTQ+ Ohioans and their families. Thanks to the Harvard Business Review for sharing why companies must recommit to LGBTQ rights. While Sylvia Ann Hewlett and Todd Sears focus on global companies, the case they make for why could benefit any organization: 1. When LGBTQ employees feel comfortable at work, engagement and retention rates are much higher. 2. Gen Z is our future workforce and 25% identify as LGBTQ. 3. Workplace equity and inclusion policies benefit all employees. Let's fight the good fight.
