I am transfixed by this article. The quartet serves as a field guide to ease humans through the four phases of a reverence for life; namely, cultivating it applying it, proclaiming it, and living it. Volume 1 starts us off with getting acquainted with this ethos and placing us on a clear, unobstructed path towards inculcating it. One key point of volume 1 is the absolute need and requirement, especially for the male gender, to embrace kindness and compassion, the provision of love as Jesus taught us, as worthy, valuable states of being, not as indicators of feckless unmanliness. This point is underscored by Dr. Schweitzer many times. As has been my practice I leave you with one of his ruminations: "Kindness works simply and perseveringly; it produces no strained relations which prejudice its working; strained relations which already exists it relaxes. Mistrust and misunderstanding it puts to flight, and it strengthens itself by calling forth answering kindness. Hence it is the furthest-reaching and the most effective of all forces."
