Amazon just reported our financial results for the first quarter of 2024. These include a set of strong financial results, but my favorite part of our earnings releases is always reading about and getting a chance to celebrate some of the remarkable innovations happening across the company. Of course, I have a particular fondness for seeing the many ways that are we are continuing to innovate on behalf of our selling partners to delight customers and drive our selling partners' success. From new generative AI capabilities within our listing tools, to how we continue to expand selection and support the launch of new brands, to the ways we're working with independent sellers to optimize our joint supply chain and provide the fastest delivery speeds ever -- there's a lot that I'm excited about for how we're continuing to partner with independent sellers to delight customers. On top of that, these innovations enable Amazon and our selling partners to support local communities and protect the environment around the world. The AI listing tool is a disaster. It often lists features the products don’t have and it removes the indexing for other keywords that drive traffic to the listing. It often leads to massive de-indexing events and reduced sales, practically killing the product. A worse shopper and seller experience. It’s not ready and wasn’t done properly. Also, the record profits reported by Amazon this quarter were taken directly from us, the third party sellers. In exchange for nothing. There’s been no value exchanged for us. Just taking our margin for your own. Let’s be honest.

Amazon joined the exclusive $2 trillion club Wednesday after investors pushed the value of the e-commerce giant's stock past the symbolic threshold. As I told, AP News (link in comments), Amazon is a company firing on all cylinders which is boosting investor sentiment and the stock price. On the retail side Amazon is still growing sales and is becoming more profitable. On the services side AWS is extremely robust, and the advertising business is enhancing margins. But it's really the investments in AI across the business are the icing on the cake. There’s a lot of positivity about Amazon’s ability to use AI in a productive way that will enhance loyalty, reduce costs and improve sales. Certainly, there are downsides, but these are mostly external – such as the threat from the FTC. Investors see these clouds as a long way off so they are not dampening the current valuation. For my latest column I reflected on Amazon's latest results, as evidence points to the disruptor becoming disrupted. Can Amazon be all things to all people or should it choose where to play?
