From 2019 to 2022, we excelled in lead creation and in-home sales, but wanted to improve our end-to-end generator installations. To overcome this, we began a strategic growth initiative through acquisitions, partnering with top installers globally. Our first acquisition was Midwest Electric and Generator, Inc Electric and Generator, chosen for its strong leadership and best-in-class generator installation capabilities in the Upper Midwest. #Sitowise Q1 2024 results were published this morning. Despite facing headwinds from the market, resulting in a decline in net sales and lower profitability, we're happy to share some highlights: - Our order book remained stable, and order intake was up. - We made progress in executing our strategy, particularly in developing new smart services and shifting our focus to growth sectors. - #AI was a key focus area during Q1, with an aim to 1) generate new value adding services for our clients and 2) improve internal efficiency and thus focus on the work that generates more value. Going forward, we're determined to improve profitability by focusing on sales efforts and growth in the energy and industrial sectors.

Being in the service business is hard: low margins, long hours, constantly keeping a sales pipeline alive, having enough staff to do the work with the right skills and experience, and so on. Today I'm working with our solar equipment company to troubleshoot an apparent issue with our battery storage. I was reminded of the rather nightmarish process we had getting the panels and battery installed in the first place, and some of the larger lessons I've learned from my own experience in the tech industry. By my observation, there's two kinds of service companies, and it feels like this applies across many industries. Type 1: We give you a vision, we tell you we're going to make your life better, and our own desire to grow as a company gets in the way of executing on everything we just told you as a client/customer. I've often experienced businesses placing their own desire to "scale" above the needs of their customers, who frequently need slow, steady, and experienced management. How does this show up? An amazing sales process followed by a delivery by inexperienced, poorly project managed, under-resourced, and/or start-and-stop service with plenty of apologies and excuses attached. Type 2: We have many conversations, we co-create a service process, and the company's growth is hinged on this ongoing collaboration. These businesses aren't placing their own growth ahead of all other goals, which means that everything that makes a Type 1 company feel amazing in the sales process doesn't exist: there's no urgency, no prepackaged vision, just digging in. These are the companies that have high domain expertise and experienced workers, but because they're placing customer needs ahead of business growth, have a difficult time articulating their "value," up front. These kinds of companies show up with reviews like, "It took longer than we expected, but they were with us the entire time, helped us understand priorities and goals, and ultimately got us to a better place and we're grateful to have worked with them." I don't know about you, but having worked for a few Type 1 companies in my career, and experienced them as a client/customer, I'd choose a Type 2 company every time. Don't believe me? But partnership programs frequently reward revenue acquisition above all else, meaning they encourage Type 1 companies to exist while Type 2 companies go overlooked. This is further complicated by the changing demographics of small business, where many underrepresented leaders seek to specifically create Type 2 businesses based on their own lived experience. The question I leave you with is, how do we reward Type 2 companies for their diligence in partner ecosystems attached to applications and platforms?
