Yesterday, I attended an International Women's Day event at Crown Towers. This year's event focused on the importance of inclusion for all women in business. It was a powerful reminder that there is still work to be done to create environments where every woman feels valued, heard, and empowered to thrive. We are getting better though and that's a great thing. Hearing stories from inspiring speakers who shared their experiences and insights on building businesses, carving out career success in the face of adversity and breaking down barriers in the workplace is something that we need to be reminded of. It's also important to know that these insights can, and should, be applied to the spaces in our lives outside of our careers. As someone who has stood amongst the stereotypical world of male dominated areas such as sprintcar racing, I understand how it feels when we're made to feel as though we don't belong. Being the only female to win a major titled motorsport event in Australia to date, I am proud of this achievement and the unwavering desire to go after what I want even if others think I don't belong. As women, we need to encourage each other to continue to go after what we want. To live without regrets. To know that we can have success in our work and personal life. Is International Women’s Day becoming performative? International Women’s Day is a time to lobby for change, raise awareness about discrimination and celebrate women’s achievements. Sadly, singular social media posts that simply name the women in brands' teams can come off as insincere and performative, reducing the occasion to a marketing ploy. Women who make and drink whisky deserve representation and recognition all-year round, not just for one day when they’re highlighted to demonstrate organisations’ ‘diversity’ before becoming absent from feeds the remainder of the year. Why is year-round recognition important? Although women have always been a vital part of the whisky industry, they’ve rarely been represented in advertising campaigns, or at industry events and awards. Even today, representation is concerningly low, with just 16% of women working in whisky believing they’re fairly represented in marketing or at industry awards*. The theme for this IWD is #inspireinclusion, so why not make a committment to highlighting and celebrating women among your organisation and consumer base 365 days a year, rather than just 1?
