Using the power of satellites in multiple orbits

For many years I struggled to believe the UK aged population and care commissioners would accept a move from voice only based telecare solutions to those incorporating video. Yet here we are in an age where Facetime, Zoom, Teams and many other video-based applications are in common use and used by many elderly people. It was noticeable at this year’s TSA Conference how many suppliers are offering devices with video elements, either for face-to-face video chats/consultations or leveraging video-based technology to detect falls and activities of daily living. I suspect the application of such devices is likely to explode over the next few years and would suggest monitoring organisations need to be able to integrate such devices at speed. Whilst the move to digital is proving to be problematic and I welcome TSA’s latest report on this issue, video was never a starter over analogue. Is it not time to fully embrace digital technologies and quickly ditch analogue based devices? The opportunities for innovation in the digital world are endless.

Balluff’s Christian Seyfried, Condition Monitoring Sensor (BCM) Product Manager, presents a virtual event overview of Condition Monitoring and the latest Balluff sensor which can be used to gather machine condition data. Can't wait to start using this new technology! I have commissioned a number of wireless lighting controls systems in both commercial and industrial settings. This will eliminate the biggest pain point - knowing what fixtures are where in the space. Normally you have to either flash each light individually and record the location manually or ask installing contractors to keep track of MAC addresses or barcodes. This will greatly simplify startup of these projects...

Back in 1999, I worked for the Dutch IT company Getronics. We tried one of the first internet broadcasts of an annual general shareholder meeting. Convinced by the head of IT, the board decided to do it all ourselves—because who needs outside experts when you have an overly confident IT department? Unfortunately, this turned out to be a classic case of "famous last words." 😉 On the day of the AGM, many of us, including myself from the Investor Relations team, eagerly awaited the live stream. It started, but within just 2 seconds, our CEO froze on the screen. Just like that, it was over. This memory came back today when I saw an invite to join the #DHL live stream of their annual shareholder meeting. Curious about what it would look like, I joined. This time, the CEO moved and talk, without turning into a statue. As expected, it was a smooth experience. Technology has improved a lot! I'm proud to have been part of those pioneering and often (!) awkward, early days. Digital transformation has been around for a long time, as my experience with Getronics shows. Especially today, it's a whirlwind journey and can be quite overwhelming at times. I'm sure we'll keep making mistakes. But that's all part of the adventure.
