Today, our CEO at Black Lives In Music, Dr Charisse Beaumont (DMus), presented powerful evidence to the Women and Equalities Committee on the endemic misogyny and harassment faced by women in the UK music industry. The shocking statistics are clear: ⭕ 71% of respondents feel bullying and harassment is accepted as part of the industry ⭕ 55% are currently experiencing it ⭕ and 78% have experienced it in their lifetime. The evidence presented today highlights the urgent need for government action to tackle this issue. Black Lives in Music is calling for the implementation of the recommendations from the Misogyny in Music Inquiry, including amending the Equality Act to protect freelance workers and imposing a duty on employers to protect workers from sexual harassment by third parties. We also need to see an end to the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that silence victims of abuse and harassment. It's time for the music industry to take responsibility for its actions and create a safe and inclusive environment for all. Black Lives in Music is committed to driving change and has launched initiatives such as the Anti-Racist Code of Conduct and the EquiTrack reporting tool to help combat discrimination and harassment in the industry. Let's work together to create a music industry that values and respects all its members, regardless of gender, race, or background.
