At his keynote address at the #RANZCP2024 NZ Conference, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey was pressed by Dr Hiran Thabrew, Chair of the RANZCP New Zealand Committee, on the Government’s commitment to increase the number of #psychiatrytraining positions, as the workforce crisis reaches critical levels. Minister Doocey assured the audience that #psychiatry remains a top priority, with plans to announce funding for more training places before next year. Dr Thabrew also informed the Minister that despite their claims denying mental health services being impacted by the hiring freeze at Health New Zealand/Te Whatu Ora, many services he knows have been impacted directly. Minister Doocey has promised to personally address the issue to ensure there is no impact on the recruitment and training of the #mentalhealthworkforce. As a #psychiatrist who works with veterans, I shared their frustration and anguish”. RANZCP spokesperson on veteran mental health care, Dr. Alexander YC Lim has emphasised the need for a new independent body to oversee the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. “We must expand access to mental health care, but we also need to ensure services are trained in how to provide culturally safe care to this unique group”.
