A great presentation this week on The Future of Green Fuels at Greenhouse
I'm always keen to learn from experts in all areas of sustainability, climate-tech, regeneration, circular economy, biophilia and anything that prioritises care for humans and our precious planet! Here's some of my outtakes:
—Green fuels are necessary for sectors we can’t electrify, such as heavy industry, manufacturing of steel, concrete, bricks, large scale logistics, aviation. We have yet to find electric solutions for heavy industry although advances in aviation fuel are well underway (for example AIR COMPANY have a captured CO2-derived jetfuel)
—Green Hydrogen - Chemical properties of hydrogen are key to net zero because it generates no greenhouse gas emissions, and can be made from biomass (waste) and other renewable energy sources via water electrolysis process
—Hydrogen processes can generate secondary fuel options like methanol and ammonia
—Production of Hydrogen from seawater - primarily uses mechanical and chemical processes and sunlight into an electrical signal
—Ammonia is another zero-carbon fuel used for fertilizer production for farming (and for mining), and as a fuel and for power generation
—Biochar is also a plant-based, carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels, particularly coal
—One of the challenges with Hydrogen is it’s not easily transportable for large scale energy production. Also there is no current infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage and transfer.
—DeCarice - Retrofitting Diesel engines to operate as hydrogen-diesel hybrids for industrial and transportation use
—Australia looking to exploit opportunities in green metal production (iron, steel) through federal government Future Made in Australia initiatives
—Key points for progress:
-Low-risk green tech is important for business uptake
-Providing a 'line of sight' to a net zero state to demonstrate viability
-Social license from consumers is critical.
—And finally of course, economics drives everything in research! As with everything, it seems...
