I'll be spoiling my General Election vote today because no party and leader both represents my interests AND is credible. I know I'm far from alone so I've been thinking about what should be done differently. I'd do the following: 1) nobody under a certain age should be permitted to stand for Government 2) nobody without experience in something outside politics should be permitted to stand for Government 3) MP salaries should go up, perhaps double And maybe: 4) voters should be made to answer some rudimentary questions at the polling station to prove they know what they are voting for These would stop people who are un-suitable for Parliament being elected, stop political parties outright hoodwinking the public and raise the quality of our politicians. I'm sure there are all sorts of reasons why these won't work or are un-democratic or come from a position of privilege but they seem like good ideas to me.

Newspoll Today The latest Newspoll today has Labor marginally ahead 51/49 two party preferred. What the poll does show is that basically both major parties are struggling with their primary vote, Labor more so than the LNP because they leak more votes to the left, in particular to the Greens. An interesting way of looking at the table below is to add the Labor and Green vote together and the LNP and One Nation vote together to give an indictative left/right split of the national vote. So for exmaple in NSW that would be 44/46 with 10% Others. That means that 'Others' vote in all other states, accept Qld where the LNP dominate will be the key in many cases to who wins those all important marginal seats come the Federal election. Identiying and reaching those 'Others' vote is what both major parties will be giving considerable attention to in order to try and win their primary vote back to their side or to get their vote via preferences. #Newspoll #fedelection

Nice to see this morning that a piece of analysis I've done at Labour Together has made it into the Guardian, Spectator and Stephen Bush's morning email. To inform the analysis, we came up with a couple of hypothetical scenarios. 1. What we think is likely to happen at the next election: Soft tory-labour switchers move back to the Conservatives, soft Con-Reform go back to voting Conservative, Tory don't knows who don't have another party preference, but are likely to vote, move back to voting Conservative. 2. All of that again, except instead of soft Con-Reform moving back to Con, we imagine a scenario in which the Reform vote totally collapses and they all vote Conservative. Of course, this is a pretty crazy scenario, and not likely - but it is useful to illustrate the extent to which the right is divided by the Reform vote and how much of a problem it is for the Conservatives. https://lnkd.in/eTqJ-K7Z
