𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗻 | 𝗘𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗭𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴 At Cosun, we strongly believe in the importance of a diverse and inclusive work environment. In this series, we celebrate the richness of different cultures and countries within Cosun and recognise how this diversity translates into the workplace. Today: Ella Zhang, Financial Manager at Aviko in Shanghai, China. A born and raised Shanghainese, she continues to enjoy living in this vibrant city. She has been working at Aviko for the past six years. Ella explains that the work culture in China places a strong emphasis on teamwork, loyalty, and respect for authority. She highlights the supportive, family-like atmosphere. “It doesn’t matter if it’s late at night or during the weekend – if you have a problem, the team will provide assistance.” This warmth is also shown when visiting Chinese colleagues, and during shared lunches. “That’s always a highlight of the day, with most colleagues ordering all kinds of foods from local restaurants!” At Aviko, Ella works closely with her Dutch colleagues and acts as the link between the Chinese and Dutch teams. “We work closely together in a supportive way, and we all genuinely appreciate open and direct communication.” “In our differences, there are important lessons”, Ella shares. “I truly admire the commitment of our colleagues abroad to preparation and training. One valuable lesson that can be learned from our team is the importance of seeking help, even when their questions aren’t fully clear yet.” #PeopleofCosun #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion

Embracing culture is a journey of self-discovery. Just as Baganda proudly wear Gomesi, and various Ugandan tribes showcase their unique traditions, our cultural identity shapes who we are. In the workplace, let's emulate this harmony. Embracing diversity is more than a checkbox; it's a journey of mutual understanding. Each culture adds a unique thread to the fabric of our collective experience. For instance, during cultural festivals, you embrace a potluck where colleagues share dishes reflecting their heritage. It's a culinary journey that sparks conversations, broadens perspectives, and reinforces the idea that everyone's story matters. Small acts like these not only recognize individual cultures but also contribute to a workplace where every voice is heard and valued. Let's continue to foster a culture that appreciates the richness each team member brings to the table! Let's celebrate the beauty of diversity and cherish the cultural tapestry that makes each of us uniquely vibrant! 🌐 #Culture #Diversity #workplaceinclusion #hrstrategies

The success of Chinatown communities in major cities around the world is rooted in key principles that support both cultural preservation and economic sustainability. Chinese communities have a long history of both cultural and economic success. Here is a summary of three important leadership lessons we can learn from the Chinese as it relates to globalisation and sustainability: First, community cohesion plays a significant role, as these areas often develop from strong immigrant networks that share resources and support new arrivals. This fosters a sense of belonging while promoting entrepreneurial ventures, particularly in retail and dining. Second, cultural authenticity attracts both locals and tourists, offering a unique, immersive experience of Chinese traditions, cuisine, and goods. This contributes to economic growth through tourism and cultural exchange. Finally, adaptability is vital, as Chinatown districts evolve to meet the changing needs of their populations while maintaining their core identity. This balance of tradition and innovation is key to their long-term success, offering lessons on how cultural identity and economic viability can thrive together in a globalized world. #HustleHard #DreamBig #StayFocused #KeepGoing #BelieveInYourself #GrindAndShine

Culture, or tradition... In Antwerp, the port town in Belgium where I was born and raised, mothers are celebrated on August 15. That's got something to do with the city's rich but religiously and economically tumultuous history. Though celebrating mothers is definitely part of our culture, not just locally but globally, the fact that people of Antwerp celebrate it on the name day of "Mother Mary", the city's patron saint, is a tradition, and this tradition got engrained in my family mores. No questions asked... The main difference between culture and tradition is that 1️⃣ traditions describe a group's beliefs and behaviors that are passed down from one generation to another. 2️⃣ Culture describes the shared characteristics of the entire group, which has been amassed throughout its history. Some traditions are interesting and harmless.. like this one. But others are not serving people much, or only a small group. Maybe 20th century industrial ways of working are the best example of widespread practices that have turned stale, and have been creating unhealthy workplace patterns for decades now. It very much seems like a tradition that is kept in place.. but for what? The illusion of control maybe 🤔 #agility #businessagility #culture #pac #orgchange #peoplematters #agilehr Ekipa Agile Consultancy Singapore

Have you heard about the recent controversy surrounding Jollibee and Benny Blanco's review? The Filipino community worldwide was in an uproar after Benny's negative comments about the beloved restaurant chain. As someone who grew up in a poor household, Jollibee was a special treat for me and my family on birthdays. The memories of the "langhap-sarap chicken joy and burger yum" are shared by millions of Filipinos, so it's no surprise that Benny's comments didn't sit well with my countrymen. Unfortunately, this kind of cultural insensitivity happens all too often, not just in reviews but also in the workplace. It's important to remember the value that certain products or places hold in different cultures. That's why I always try to approach diverse situations with cultural intelligence and cultural humility. Cultural intelligence means having the skills to effectively relate and work with people from different cultures. It's about crossing boundaries and thriving in multiple cultural environments. On the other hand, cultural humility is having a humble and respectful attitude towards individuals of other cultures, recognizing that we can never know everything about other cultures, and approaching learning about them as a lifelong goal. While it's possible that Benny's comments were meant as humor, it's important to remember that we should never make fun of someone else's culture, especially when it comes to something as cherished as Jollibee. Let's strive to be more culturally intelligent and humble, and to appreciate the value that different cultures bring to our lives. #culturalintelligence #culturalhumility #workplacewellbeing

I was fortunate enough to celebrate New Year in Singapore – what an incredible place. My daughter had previously worked there and returning for New Year together, was a post COVID plan which we were finally able to achieve. We enjoyed many aspects of an engaging nation, with ease of access to transport, walking routes and a real sense of East meets West in a blend of culture and history. Visiting the National Gallery was a highlight. I am not usually an ‘art person’ – I know what I like, but the Liu Kuo-Sung exhibition on Experimentation as Method, triggered hugely positive engagement and discussion in relation to challenge and the critical role that innovation contributes. His narrative was fascinating and I could not help but draw parallels in achieving excellence in HR’s role to encourage interaction, supporting mutual growth and maturity; naturally restraining each other as a new vitality is created through collaboration. Over a 70 year+ career, Liu Kuo-Sung has said that he continues to progress his thinking and now feels that art or culture, should be borderless and global, not nationalist. He was asked the question: where do you find inspiration to express yourself? ….a great question. A very thought provoking visit. #singapore #nationalgallerysingapore #liukuosung #experimentationasmethod #reinvention #perspectives
