Why chickens? 🐓 At Almat Farms, we’re home to unique species you rarely find in Nigeria—like Red Kalahari goats, Boer goats, alpacas, and llamas. Yet, chickens are an essential part of our farm. Why? Chickens play a crucial role in sustainable farming. They naturally enrich the soil with organic compost, help control pests by feeding on insects, and provide farm-fresh eggs and meat. These contributions make them indispensable to our farm’s ecosystem. Every animal at Almat Farms, big or small, has a purpose. Chickens remind us that sometimes, the simplest things make the biggest difference. #AlmatFarms #ChickensOnTheFarm #SustainableFarming #LivestockCare #FarmEcosystem

The Food Systems Integrated Program (FSIP), a collaborative initiative between IFAD and UNIDO, is dedicated to improving the productivity and sustainability of #foodsystems in rural areas across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Through the promotion of collaboration and innovation, the program seeks to establish resilient food systems that contribute to rural development and economic advancement. Additionally, the initiative aims to reduce methane emissions in the livestock and rice sectors, along with addressing deforestation issues in the #livestock and palm oil sectors. It will also advocate for #aquaculture as a viable source of protein and income, as well as integrated landscape management as a sustainable alternative for land use in the cultivation of wheat and maize. #FoodSecurity #RuralDevelopment #SustainableAgriculture 👉https://ow.ly/pooi50UAbEw

In Concession, some 55 kilometres from Harare, Hazvinei Mangwena, a subsistence farmer, looks at what remains of her crop in a field perched on a hillside. Downhill, in what used to be part of her field, a sprawling settlement has emerged and is engulfing more fields, pressuring subsistence farmers to look for other pieces of land suitable for cultivation. Farmers are now cultivating on hilly land in response to a raging conflict between agriculture and urbanisation, which is projected to worsen food insecurity. https://lnkd.in/disAiaKD

🌾 Transforming Lives through Aquaponics in Homabay County 🌊 Before climate change reshaped his reality, Alex Ojwang was a dedicated sorghum and maize farmer in Kaksingiri Valley, Kenya. However, unpredictable rainfall devastated his farm and income, leaving his family struggling to meet basic needs, including school fees for his children. In 2023, everything changed when Victory Farms partnered with Feed the Future and USAID Kenya/East Africa to launch the Homabay Extensive Aquaponics Program (HEAP). This initiative aims to boost food production and create jobs through sustainable aquaponics, integrating fish farming with vegetable cultivation. Victory Farms is developing partnerships with smallholders (“Pond Partners”) to build egg production ponds on their land. Their support to Pond Partners includes water preparation, stocking fish in the ponds, feeding the fish, collecting the eggs weekly, and providing horticulture water supply. When Alex learned about the opportunity to become a "Pond Partner," he didn’t hesitate. Now, Victory Farms is helping him—and 25 other smallholders—establish egg production ponds on their lands, using solar-powered systems to deliver water sustainably. The result? A reliable income from fish farming and the ability to grow crops like tomatoes. Watch his story below 👇 #Aquaponics #SustainableFarming #WorldFoodDay
