Polish catamaran manufacturer Sunreef Yachts has announced the sale of its first unit in its Sunreef 35-metre Eco series.  The 35-metre sailing catamaran will feature yard-patented integrated solar panels embedded into the hull side, superstructure, bimini, custom-engineered batteries, and electric engines for ‘silent’ and ‘emission-free’ cruising. “With our cutting-edge green technologies, this yacht delivers a sustainable yet comfortable way to explore the oceans,” says Francis Lapp, Sunreef Yachts founder and president. #marineindustry #catamarans #emissions #enviroment #sustainability #yachting #leisuremarine #business #marinetech #superyachts Keep up to date with the latest industry news. Are Explorer Yachts the Ultimate in Ocean going vessel? The potential to fully escape to the most remote corners definitely has huge appeal.   Whatever your opinion, Explorer yachts 🚢 are on the rise and with a reported 740 vessels in fleet (6% of all Superyachts according to BOAT International Media) and a further 88 in build, shipyards worldwide are competing for a slice of this growing pie ⚓.   But this isn’t just about slapping a few extra fuel tanks on a luxury vessel. These are ultra high-tech yachts with long range, self-sufficient capabilities, often built to Ice Class specifications, yet still providing the level of luxury that owners expect. Shipyards need to rethink design and engineering, upgrade testing facilities and build processes, and even adapt marketing strategies to ride this wave. Heavyweights like Damen Yachting, Sanlorenzo Yacht, and Feadship are all building incredible Explorers, and ICON Yachts conversions are next level.   But as someone who is pretty Eco-conscious, I’m super excited for VARD's REV Ocean launch next year, and love the fact it will be used as a scientific platform alongside the luxury guest experience. Architecturaly styled yachts can offer a better guest experience. Why should a yacht look like a yacht? M/Y THIS IS IT is a catamaran of 708 Gross Tonnes (GT). She offers almost double the volume from the average yacht of her length*. Yachts that are going to operate in fair weather and sheltered waters don’t need to be ice classed, have huge bows, carry massive volumes of fuel and water and be capable sailing through a hurricane. Designing a yacht to fits its purpose can open doors and opportunities to think outside the box. The recent Explorer Yacht Summit hosted at Monaco Yacht Club by BOAT International Media, gave an interesting overview about the explorer yacht market and topics around ocean exploration. Yacht owner Erik Vonk shared the 17-year refit evolution of a 1989 fishing trawler, Scintilla Maris, into a robust expedition yacht - echoing other comments on the day about the seaworthiness and seakeeping quality of ex-military or government vessels, trawlers or offshore support boats. Converting an existing vessel and retaining the hull and superstructure generally saves significant costs and resources for raw materials and manufacturing, however there are other considerations when looking at a rebuild and entire life cycle of a conversion yacht such as electrical systems, steelwork and reclassification. GERMANY prooved again to be the land of the giants when it comes to yacht building. With 314 superyachts delivered since 1950, Germany stands as a key player in the construction of large yachts. German shipyards excel with an average length of 58.5 meters and a volume of 1,703 GT, ranking among the leaders in building yachts over 80 meters (8.9% of the global total). More than just a pretty boat. Yes, the R42 is pretty, but let’s not forget a few other attributes that have made her the quintessential ocean cruiser over the last quarter of a century. Let’s start at the bottom, with her encapsulated lead keel moulded as part of the hull, no bolts and no chance of this long fin keel coming off. Aft of the keel, we have a full skeg-hung rudder that supports the rudder from root to tip, great for protection and reinforcement. We also have a solid GRP laminate hull; we don’t use a foam-cored hull – we don’t need to save weight or add a possible point of failure on an ocean-crossing yacht where we don’t need to. Did you know, that below the waterline, we use clear gelcoat because we want to see there are no voids in the laminates, just to be 100% sure. We also fit water and fuel tankage low down, beneath the floor, contributing to the R42’s stability. On the subject of stability, who could forget the engine location? It’s not where it can disturb those sleeping in the aft cabins; it's low and central in the saloon. It keeps the engine weight centrally fore and Aft and above the keel, contributing to her excellent sea-kindly motion and stability. The location makes it easier to access for daily checks and gives all-around space for servicing – we have a ventilation system within the engine mounts to keep the engine cool, improving economy and extending the life of belts too. Today, you won’t find all these features on another sub-50-ft yacht in production. Why not? Put simply, other yachts aren’t designed for the sailing our owners undertake. Many R42 owners have crossed oceans, and some have sailed or are sailing the world. Some report that the boat is better at taking rough stuff than they are, while others enjoy 35-knot winds mid-ocean. Wherever you’d like to cruise in an R42, you’ll always know there’s more to her than her gorgeous looks. Rustler Yachts.
