I came across this TED talk about leadership and Martin Gutmann makes an interesting point about what leadership qualities are. He compares the polar explorers Shackleton and Amenson, asking why Shackleton is praised and Amenson forgotten. Having read both of Shackleton’s books and being a bit of a fan, it surprised me that I was sympathetic to Gutmann’s position. The fact is Amenson planned appropriately and succeeded. Shackleton didn’t. What he did have was a huge amount of charisma, force of will and that indefinable quality that makes people want to follow. Gutmann makes the point that good leadership can be boring. Shackleton was exciting and did some inspiring things (during a crisis that he arguably caused by poor planning). Gutmann says that we should redefine what good leadership is. He may be right, but the points I would make is leadership is not management and some leaders are better in some circumstances than others. For example, Churchill was pretty good at fighting Hitler but a rubbish peacetime Prime Minister. I’d be interested to know what people think and who they look up to as a good leader? #restructuring #leadership #management #strategy https://lnkd.in/ekATxHj9
