Ever since I started working as a Sound Technician, I have had people asking me if I have stopped playing the drums in the pit for musicals. The answer is: that depends. I have been trying to expand my horizons by learning about Audio and Sound Production, and working in the Tech part of theater. I would also extend that to concerts, worship services, etc. I have been playing the drums less and less. That doesn't mean I won't, given the right circumstances - show, musical director, stage manager... but it is no longer my preference. Someone once asked me if I would ever consider being an on-stage performer. I said, "You mean like an actor? No way. I know my level of competence and that is above it. I really admire those people who can do that, but I can tell you straightaway that I am not one." I really enjoy the mental challenge of running the sound for shows. Every show there are different challenges, a different potential riddle or puzzle to be solved. It is never the same show to show, or even performance to performance. Last night, for example, in the first night of the show we had a problem with a microphone that we had not had before throughout tech week - and it was up to me to try to figure out the problem, or at least figure out a work-around. Will I still play the drums sometime? Probably. But more often than not you will probably see my name in programs as a Sound Tech. And if nobody has any problems hearing the show, I have done my job well.

10 THINGS I HAVE LEARNT FROM OVER 9 YEARS AS A MUSICAL ARTIST (Part 5) (Cont'd) #5. Never lower your standards. In my wee days of starting out performing, I performed at an event with bad sound, and I remember how badly it affected my performance. It ruined my mood for the rest of the week and it took a while for me to completely get over it. It was so bad. It’s funny because people there probably forgot about the bad sound almost immediately after leaving the event, but here’s me beating myself up real bad.😅. But really, it ruined everything I had in mind. Since that day, I made provision of good sound, the barest minimum to have me perform at an event. I’d rather plan to perform without a mic than perform with a bad sounding mic. I am a very sensitive audiophile, and I genuinely dislike bad sound. I remember telling a friend back when I was in university that I wouldn’t perform at her Hall of Residence’s dinner if they couldn’t guarantee me good sound. She said I shouldn’t be picky at that ‘level’ of my career.😅 My response to her was in this light - I am not just a singer; I am a sonic artist with a nuanced attention to the emotions I’m trying to convey and the reaction I want to evoke and provoke in my audience. And a faulty medium of communication jeopardises this. The aim is for my audience to be enthralled, for me to feel thrilled, and for the goal of entertainment to be achieved. I understand the place of unforeseen issues happening sometimes, but setting good, attainable standards and sticking to them saves you from a lot. Till today, I emphasise the importance of sound when I’m to perform anywhere. It’s beyond the money; it’s about fulfilling the art. #6. No socially normalised substance makes you better inspired. It’s all a mirage. You can perform at a top level and create incredible art without consuming or abusing substances. Work out regularly, rest, draw from your experiences, immerse yourself in others’ stories, and listen for the whispers amid the noise around you. There’s a wealth of inspiration in those spaces. Do not delude yourself with the notion that creativity lies in puffs, snuffs, and cups. #7. Never do it with levity. No matter how small the platform may seem, as long as you’re lifting your voice or displaying your gift, do it as if you’re at the Super Bowl. Your artistry will thank you in the long run. Take nothing for granted. Do it like you mean it. (Continue in Next Post)

Check-out my website: www.drneilhillman.com It's time for part 2 of Jason Nicholas and my conversation with the Wicked production sound mixer Simon Hayes, and the on-set music editor, Josh Winslade. In this episode we talk in-depth about the creative decisions behind Simon's sound recording strategy, his timing and justification for switching to fully digital radio mics and the low-down on how a great relationship with the Visual Effects supervisor is so important in the quest for capturing the best possible performance from artists on set...
