Were indigenous Australians the pioneers of place-based events? At their core, indigenous Acknowledgements of, and corresponding Welcomes to Country are a celebration of understanding between a community and visitors to that community. The Welcome to Country came with an expectation from the hosts: We will welcome you onto you our land, and provide you with safe passage, providing that you can show us that you understand what's important to us. Before white settlement, it’s understood that sometimes months of negotiation occurred before a nation’s elders would permit this safe passage. Understandably, reaching an agreement warranted a ceremony, a celebration. In a sense, a Welcome to Country, and the responding Acknowledgement of country, is a celebration of two different cultures coming together and understanding each other. This encapsulates the spirit of place-based events: they’re an overt show to outsiders of what's important to a community. They’re equally an invitation to outsiders to come in and experience these values. I believe we still have a long way to go in incorporating indigenous wisdom into our thinking when it comes to community-led, place-based events. What do you think?
