For over twenty years, Common Future has led the charge in advancing racial equity and fostering a more equitable economy. Last summer, Common Future officially adopted a transformative approach to leadership: the introduction of Jess Yupanqui Feingold, Sandhya Nakhasi, and Jennifer Swayne Njuguna, Esq. SHRM-SCP as the Common Future Co-CEOs. Sharing power is not the norm; it requires training, unlearning, and a willingness to explore what co-leadership means in practice. To honor that, they are sharing a Co-Leadership Toolkit—designed to demystify misconceptions about co-leadership and provide insights into our particular approach. Thrilled to see this groundbreaking study by Lisa Deutsch out! Earlier in this fall, we reflected on our observations from playing and studying this integration role in projects trying to create impact, and both found that „Catherding“ a group of highly skilled experts goes way beyond traditional project management. … It requires to facilitate a group’s research and discovery process, and integrate views and insights of highly skilled experts … with the goal to enable and leverage them in applying their prowess to jointly create impact. … It asks the person who „herds“ the cats to make sure that no group member gets lost on the way, exploring directions that don’t contribute to the joint mission, … while respecting a high demand and need of autonomy, … and squaring that with the need of the group to stay and work together, because otherwise no one can arrive at the joint goal. … And while it helps to have domain knowledge in order to gauge whether a debate plausibly could help resolve the problem the group set out to tackle, it‘s by far not sufficient to help a group create value out of their joint contributions! Taking on this facilitator-integrator role is necessary in addition, and it requires a skillset that is an expertise in its own right. What does it matter that the group arrived in budget and on time, when it walked in the wrong direction? A group of interdisciplinary experts can only create impact if they find a good answer to the challenges outlined above. Be it in inter- and transdisciplinary science, or in building software services and data science and AI powered solutions, or when trying to craft evidence-based policies - the above challenges are remarkbly similar. That‘s why causable offers upskilling opportunities to domain experts who want to learn how to leverage the joint power of many bright minds to create impact. Are you tired of fruitless discussions? Or frustrated that an all star team gets stuck seemingly out of nowhere all the time, and you cannot track why? Talk to us about a coaching, training for your team, or tailored program grounded in your practical day to day experiences. > Learn to reflect and transform your leadership practices, > explore the facilitator mindset and add the tools that help you apply it, > and expand your skills and flexibility in helping a group to jointly remove obstacles and stay on their course, > so that you can help them to reliably and regularly create value for others on the way. Just ping Silvia Maier, PhD for a short coffee call to explore together what‘s possible.
Our work is like herding cats, they say. This exciting metaphor comes from a recently published Eawag study with the participation of the NCCS office, which, among other things, has conducted a social science study of the challenges of integrative leadership for our #NCCS-Impacts research programme. Research programmes like the NCCS-Impacts typically bring together a wide variety of experts from different fields with the aim of developing joint research and communication products in an integrative process. To manage such complex programmes, a wide range of skills and sufficient resources are needed to ensure that integration is successful. From time to time, one or other of the cats may take a different path. Keeping an overview here is a daily challenge for us and, as the illustration shows, sometimes requires a sense of humour. Many thanks to Lisa Deutsch, Astrid Björnsen, Niklaus E. Zimmermann, Christian Zurbrügg and Sabine Hoffmann for the exciting results and the pleasant collaboration. 3rd of October – Reunification Day in Germany. What a moment to reflect on the power of dialogue. Yes, we need dialogue in this country—between East and West, young and old, men and women, in politics, at home, and within organizations. And of course, in Germany and many places in this world. I’ve just wrapped up our third LinkedIn Audio Event on Dialogue Skills and the Deep Democracy Paradigm. My Polish co-speaker, Anna Gabryjelska, Dipl. PW, asked a thought-provoking question after my contextual introduction: "How do you know that there hasn’t been enough dialogue?" What I notice, public conversations escalate quickly. Many of us remain in bubbles and feel irritated or surprised when we encounter different perspectives. Tension in conversations causes people to turn away, especially when things heat up. Would Dialogue Skills have been trained in schools over the last decades, we might be better in standing our ground, sensing tension early, being curious towards the other side, and staying with the tension long enough to foster a deeper understanding—of ourselves and others. This approach builds awareness and leads to creative growth in relationships. In organizations, this mindset could also influence everything from conflict management to stakeholder dialogue, team culture, and development. Ideally, it encourages regular, facilitated spaces for open forums and group processes. This needs of course leaders embracing conflict as a catalyst for growth, and with strong dialogue skills. These catalysts are better positioned to navigate the balance between conversation and decision-making. Mastery lies in the fluidity between the two. Our B.ONFIRE leadership training SEED includes the training of these skills especially in the second phase of the 'transformative catalyst' and the third 'the wise elder' - while embracing the responsibilities of leadership roles. If you are curious to know more, send me a personal message. Our next open cohort starts end of January. Grateful for another deep and inspiring conversation dear Anna Gabryjelska, Dipl.
