Litter Fences: Litter fences along with canal nets, storm-water socks are several interventions we utilise to control windblown single-use plastics/litter. Public spaces like picnic sites, sports fields, beaches and event sites that are open and exposed to wind, the local environment can greatly benefit from these interventions. Litter fences are specifically designed barriers used to capture and control wind-blown litter. Litter fences come in various designs and materials, but their main function is to act as a physical barrier that catches litter. Litter fences can be strategically placed perpendicular to prevailing wind thereby preventing the wind from carrying lightweight litter into rivers, estuaries and the sea. Litter fences concentrate litter for easy collection as the litter is trapped in a single line and is not blown into the water. Fences often funnel captured litter into specific areas or collection bags, making it easier and more efficient to clean up. There are several types of litter fences, each suited for different situations and needs: • Portable fences: These lightweight, movable fences are ideal for temporary use or in areas with changing wind patterns. • Perimeter fences: Permanent structures placed around the entire site perimeter to capture overall windblown litter. • Windbreak fences: Designed to redirect wind currents away from areas with high litter generation, like active dumping zones. • Netted fences: Combine a solid structure with a mesh netting that effectively captures airborne litter. Benefits of using litter fences: • Reduced environmental impact: Prevents litter from polluting surrounding areas, waterways, and wildlife habitats. • Improved community relations: Lessens negative public perception of waste generated at events and public spaces. • Compliance with regulations like event permits: Strong winds like what we have in the Western Cape will carry litter many kilometres away, polluting other sites. • Cost-effective: Reduces time taken to collect litter by concentrating litter in one place and not over a large geographical area. Things to consider when choosing litter fences: • Site-specific wind patterns: The fence design and placement should consider prevailing wind directions and strength. • Type and volume of waste: Different materials and fence heights may be needed depending on the waste handled. • Budget and maintenance: The initial cost and ongoing maintenance needs of different fence types should be factored in. Overall, litter fences are valuable in combating windblown litter and promoting responsible waste management. They offer a practical and effective solution for landfills, transfer stations, and other facilities dealing with high volumes of waste. https://lnkd.in/dYTjXymW

Yesterday, some of our team participated in a community litter pick around Hendy Park and Coed Bach! We borrowed all the necessary equipment from Pontarddulais Library, a Litter Picking Hub listed on Caru Cymru / Keep Wales Tidy. Did you know there are over 200 Litter Picking Hubs open across Wales? They provide everything you need for a safe and effective clean-up – litter pickers, hi-vis vests, rubbish bags, and hoops to keep your bags open even on breezy days. Getting involved was easy thanks to the Litter Picking Hubs. It's a great way to give back to the community while enjoying some fresh air and sunshine. Plus, it's a great way to break up the workday, get some steps in, and boost productivity and mood! I think that Izzy enjoyed a run around too! Get involved here: https://lnkd.in/eT2gAjYk We’re planning to make this a monthly or bi-weekly activity. It’s a simple yet impactful way to contribute to keeping our local area cared for . I encourage everyone to look into similar initiatives. It’s a great opportunity to clear your mind and make a tangible difference in your community. 🌍💚 #CommunityEngagement #Sustainability #KeepWalesTidy #CaruCymru #LitterPick
