"In the best way, this job was a really challenging puzzle," says Cultivate's Jon Schwartz about this spot for Nevada Energy, created by R&R Partners/Las Vegas.
"We previz'd the entire spot beforehand in Blender and immediately began figuring out how to make those shots a reality. Given how much our characters in the spot are interacting with letters that are fully CG elements, we knew that precision was key to making sure these 3D letters and words looked like they were truly in the scene.
"In our 3D software, we measured each and every word so that our art department would be able to create the practical elements that our talent would interact with and that everything would properly align. For example, there are several scenes where our characters lift up large 3D block letters. In reality, they were usually lifting one small piece of wood or foam core, and it was really important to me that we knew what our talent would be grabbing onto once that practical piece was transformed into a CG letter.
"We did things like that for almost every shot, ad-nauseum, but, when we got to watch it all come together in post, it was extremely gratifying.
"On top of all of that, we also shot with a motion control arm to inject the spot with as much dynamic and interesting movement as possible. That was crucial for making sure our CG letters had dimensionality, but added another layer of difficulty when aligning things with our previz. To keep track of where our CG objects were on the day of our shoot, we first created a grid in our previz software that eventually translated to our real world set. This ensured that we always knew where our CG letters were, even when we couldn't actually see them on the physical set.
"Without my DP, Patrick Ouziel, and VFX Artist, Joey Deutsch, sitting with me for hours on Zoom during the previz process, none of this would have been remotely possible."

🚨BREAKING NEW GROUND IN VFX: INTRODUCING 'SKIN DRAFTING' - A WORLD FIRST!🚨
I'm incredibly proud to announce that our studio has developed a cutting-edge VFX technique called 'Skin Drafting'—a world-first innovation in visual effects! This technique allows us to seamlessly wrap the skin of one character onto another, creating entirely new possibilities in character design and transformation.
Initially, this technique was believed to have been used in the iconic film Sivaji during the 'Style' song, where Rajinikanth’s skin was thought to be wrapped with a foreign actor's. However, thanks to a recent breakdown by Expert FX on YouTube, we discovered that Sivaji did not actually use Skin Drafting, but instead relied on rotoscoping and brightness adjustments.
This means that our studio has achieved something truly
groundbreaking—ushering in a new era of VFX with Skin Drafting!
A huge thanks to the team at Expert FX for their detailed breakdown and insights, helping to clarify this important moment in VFX history.
Check out the video to see our revolutionary work in action. We are excited to push the boundaries of what’s possible in VFX and look forward to the creative opportunities this innovation will unlock! 🎥✨

VFX Pipeline Expedition: Day 13 - Navigating the Wonders of Compositing!
Hello, fellow VFX enthusiasts👋! Today, let's embark on a journey into the realm of compositing, a pivotal phase in the VFX pipeline orchestrated by the skilled hands of a Pipeline Technical Director (TD).
Decoding Compositing in VFX:
1. Definition: Compositing is the process of combining visual elements from separate sources into a single, cohesive image or sequence.
2. Layering and Blending: Merging multiple layers of footage, 3D renders, and effects to create a seamless composition.
3. Color Correction: Adjusting colors to achieve consistency and enhance the overall visual appeal.
4. Green Screen Integration: Integrating actors or objects filmed against a green screen into digital environments.
5. Visual Effects Integration: Adding CG elements, simulations, and other visual effects to live-action footage.
Key Tools and Software:
- Adobe After Effects: A versatile tool for compositing, motion graphics, and visual effects.
- Foundry Nuke: A node-based compositing software widely used in the VFX industry.
Outcome:
A final composite that seamlessly blends live-action footage with digital elements, creating the magic viewers see on the screen.
Why Compositing Matters:
Compositing is the glue that binds together various visual elements, transforming disparate pieces into a unified and visually stunning whole.
Stay tuned as our expedition through the VFX pipeline continues, unraveling the mysteries of each phase! 💫

I applied to a job as a 3D character artist for cryptorecruit. Now the issue isn't the fact I didn't get the job, I know I won't. There is a ton of competition out there and that's fine I get it. That's just the nature of the beast as they say. The issue is selling me a course to become "interview ready" on web3 related stuff (which mind you has nothing to do with actual 3D art lol at all) for the low price of $199 (dangling the idea that I am saving from $399 original price so buy buy buy this killer deal now or lose out fomo technique). Is this like a new thing that companies do now? Feels tacky as hell. Nah. I'll pass. This is yet more BS I have to navigate as an artist in order to land new employment.
Crap like this makes me more determined than ever to get my youtube channel up and look into secondary ways to be more self-reliant as a 3D artist. This industry is in a bad state.

🚀 𝐕𝐅𝐗 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧: 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫 🚀
Hey all!
I recently shared a study I completed, inspired by one of my favorite films, Interstellar, however, I thought of creating a nice breakdown to demonstrate the thought process of it all. 🌌✨
In this project, I selected a few shots from the movie and replaced the characters with CGI models, meticulously matching the original lighting and mood. Here’s a breakdown of my process:
𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬:
- I studied the original lighting setups, paying close attention to light sources, direction, color temperature, and intensity.
- This involved deconstructing the key light, fill light, rim light, and ambient light to understand how they contribute to the overall mood.
𝐂𝐆𝐈 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
- With a pre-made model (credited in the original post), I carefully positioned the camera with an approximate configuration as seen in the movie (roughly a 35mm or IMAX 75mm in some shots).
- Using Maya as my DCC and Renderman, I recreated the lighting to match the original as closely as possible.
- Nuke helped fine-tune the integration, adjusting for color grading.
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬:
- One major challenge was replicating the subtle interplay of light and shadow, especially in the highly reflective surfaces of the chosen CG model.
- Another was achieving the ambient lighting without the original set HDRI. This had to be done in a very unorthodox way. Utilizing AI, I removed the character from the original shot and used that as a makeshift ambient projected onto geometries around the CG model.
Lighting is crucial in storytelling; even minor adjustments can significantly impact the feel of a scene.
Attention to detail in matching the lighting and mood can make CGI characters blend seamlessly into live-action footage.
I’m always eager to connect with fellow artists and enthusiasts. Currently, I am open to work and excited for my next opportunity in the VFX industry. Feel free to reach out for discussions, collaborations, or job opportunities!

The most important thing is that you have to have the visual effects working for you, instead of you working for the visual effects. Hence as an artist I am showcasing my own VFX showreel. Hope you like it.
The image isn't just created with the camera. That's just a part. The editor gets an imprint. The colorist does something to it. Visual effects does something to it. It's not just what you capture that people are going to see. The image gets made in many ways. In production and then in post.
Today, with computer-generated visual effects, everything is possible. So we've seen everything. If it can be imagined, we can put it on screen.
