Sef McCullough explains nicely the importance of Retouching in a CG workflow. I recently helped finish a new campaign for Tanqueray for the guys at Unreasonable Studios. Assets were built in house but the finishing and sparkle were all wrapped up in Photoshop. Fine details that in my opinion would not be realistic or possible from a cost and time perspective if solely done in CG. If we also consider feedback and amends, you will never beat Photoshop and a retouchers speed to make changes and deliver a new round over CG. It's always just quicker in retouch. Something I just remembered while writing this. I worked a CG KV brief in Feb and as per client request I extended the green screen shot with live action assets by around 40% on one side and the top. Filling the new negative space with more environment and so on. A couple rounds later we had to render out more CGI assets (it was a space battle scene) and once the CG artist saw how wide I made the new shot he said with some annoyance (my impression over slack) it's like making the camera lens 50% bigger in Nuke! and that's not how it works or even possible*, to which I laughed and replied "Thaaaats showbizzz babyyyy". Anyway, I laughed. Don't think he did. All in all, what Sef says. CG stills for advertising and print will always shine more with a touch of retouch. The chilli sauce to ones Kebab 🤝

This is an incredibly good essay that articulates very well my feelings about authenticity in the photography and film work I do. It's the things I CAN'T control that actually inspire me after the act of creation. The foreknowledge that those things will be present and discoverable only after I capture the photons is very exciting.
