The Alpha and the Omega: A Re-Entry Vision Summit to Transform Lives and Society My son was given a 20-year prison sentence just 3 months after turning 17. It was a sentence that devastated his family and changed all our lives. He served 13 1/2 years and came out a grown man, yet still thinking like a 17-year-old. I got into the reentry field to help him inside the system and when he would return. I learned so much, that I knew I had to pay it forward. Thus, my history in the re-entry field. I know how hard it is to re-enter society. That’s why a group of women impacted by the judicial system founded On-Point Re-Entry Consortium (OPRC) a nonprofit organization that helps former inmates find jobs, housing, and support. We have helped thousands of people rebuild their lives and contribute to their communities. The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with more than 2.3 million people in prison or jail. That’s more than the population of Houston, Texas. Many of these people are nonviolent offenders who are locked up for minor crimes or drug offenses. They face harsh conditions, abuse, and neglect in prison, and they have little hope for the future. We need your help to make the Global Re-Entry Vision Summit a reality. The Global Re-Entry Vision Summit is a lifetime opportunity to bring together over 500 people from all over the world to address mass incarceration. You can make a difference in the lives of millions of people and change the world for the better. We have secured dates and hopefully a venue in Austin, Texas, from November 5-8, 2024, but we need your help to make it happen. We are looking for two celebrities who champion re-entry and believe in decreasing or ridding mass incarceration. We have no money, but we have a vision and a dream. If you are a celebrity or know someone who is, please don’t hesitate and reach out to us now. This is your chance to be part of history and create a legacy. Respectfully, Mary E Moran, Executive Director, OPRC www.onpointreentry.org mmoran@onpointreentry.org

As we wrap up Second Chance Month, let’s commit to fostering environments of empathy, understanding and opportunity. Let’s champion programs and policies that break down barriers to #reentry, support rehabilitation and promote pathways to success for individuals seeking better outcomes. #TeamAventiv #FairChanceHiring #FairChanceHiringEmployer
Aventiv believes in the power of #SecondChances. Studies show that having a record reduces the likelihood of a job callback or offer by as much as 50%, posing a serious challenge for those who want to achieve positive outcomes upon release. Our CHRO, Gretchen Meyer, recently joined guest speakers Michelle Cirocco, CEO of the Televerde Foundation, and Timothy Daniels, Director of Reentry for the Prison Entrepreneurship Program, at a virtual event to educate our team on fair chance hiring best practices and demonstrate the role they play in reducing #recidivism. Thank you, Michelle and Timothy, for your insightful contributions to help educate our team on leading change. If you want to learn more about Aventiv’s commitment to fair chance hiring, and the tools we are providing the incarcerated to prepare them for #reentry, we invite you to explore the insights below or to visit: https://bit.ly/3Ukqhdt #FairChanceHireEmployer #ReentryMatters #FairChanceHiring

We talk about diversity & inclusion but how far are we prepared to take it? Parking any bias and attended last Thursday's discussion around prisoner engagement and work placement within the construction industry. I genuinely had no idea the level of work that goes into identifying and nurturing talent within the prison system, the education and accreditations offered, let alone sourcing the second chance opportunity of work. Hearing from the panel, and the former inmate that has benefitted from the programme highlights the positive changes that can be achieved. Whilst this source of recruitment won't suit all businesses or sectors it's clear there is pool of untapped talent, motivated by change and willing to earn valued place in society. https://lnkd.in/gH-F-anv

Change can be a wonderful thing! We recently upgraded the job and housing opportunities board in our Reentry Resource Center. Our trusty whiteboard worked well for years, unless someone accidentally brushed against it and erased the listings we’d written- oops! Now, RRC visitors have the option to view a slideshow of opportunities, and scan a QR code to easily view, save, and apply for the many opportunities listed. For formerly incarcerated individuals, securing housing and employment can be a challenging part of the reentry journey. We partner with local second chance employers and search second chance opportunities to help our participants be successful. Our RRC team (pictured here) update the listings throughout the week, and are always eager to assist RRC visitors! #JusticeReimagined #SecondChances #SecondChanceHiring #FairChanceHiring

As I write this post, I'm reminded of my unique and enduring bond with my father. For 35 years, he's been serving a life sentence, a reality he's faced since I was just an infant. Despite the harsh circumstances, our weekly to bi-weekly phone conversations have been a beacon of hope and connection. Ever the optimist, my father passionately discusses his plans for the future—a future he envisions outside the prison walls, maintaining his innocence and hoping for release. In our conversations, he often shares his aspirations to adapt and thrive in today's world—a world vastly different from the one he knew as George Bush Sr. was President when he was imprisoned. This stark difference always leads me to ponder on the broader issue of reentry into society for those incarcerated. Each year, about 650,000 Americans are released from prison, and the vast majority face enormous challenges in adjusting back into society, with a staggering 75% still unemployed a year after release. I recently came across a heartwarming initiative in Denver that resonated deeply with me - R&R Head Labs, a barbershop that exclusively employs previously incarcerated individuals and offers not just jobs but a supportive community aiming to make reentry smoother. This barbershop isn't just about providing employment; it's about restoring dignity and hope, offering mentorship and a network of support that tackles the emotional and logistical challenges these individuals face. This innovative model, envisioned by James Repenning and supported by an advisory council of former inmates turned advocates, is a testament to what we can achieve when approaching reentry with empathy, support, and a real commitment to change. It highlights the potential of transformative opportunities beyond mere employment, aiming to reintegrate individuals into society successfully and sustainably. My heart is filled with hope and realism as I share these thoughts. The path my father and many others face upon potential release is fraught with challenges, yet with initiatives like R&R Head Labs, there is a beacon of hope. It is a reminder that a second chance is possible with the proper support and opportunities. Here's to fresh starts, fresh cuts, and a society that embraces and uplifts everyone, regardless of their past. #SocialJustice #Reentry #SecondChances #IncarcerationReform #RnRHeadLabs
