Our Board Member Elizabeth Baxter took the diversity and inclusion message to the solar sector yesterday. Speaking at #UKSolarSummit in London, she polled the audience on how many had a leadership team that was 40% female (our target for 2030). Sadly only two people raised their hand - which isn't a surprise considering the current 'state of the nation' on diversity in the energy sector. (Check out our latest stats - 🔗 at the end 👇) Key takeaways from Elizabeth: 📈 Female representation in the energy sector is lagging behind the FTSE 350, which has already met the 40% target women on boards (29% for energy). 📈 When it comes to women in executive board roles, the sector does even more poorly at 16% 💡 More women need to be appointed to the key decision-making roles in leadership but it shouldn't just be about poaching talent 💡 Companies need to focus on cultivating their existing female talent - i.e. providing professional development, EFFECTIVE flexible working, supportive cultures and role models 💡 The talent pool shouldn't be seen as a finite resource, but as something to be grown. 👏 Despite being competitors, some of the largest companies in the energy sector are working together to advance diversity and inclusion (through PfW's Energy Leaders Coalition) 👏 This includes a campaign to attract more young women into the industry through apprenticeships. #internationalwomensday is a good time to recognize people and projects doing important work on improving gender equity. This video highlights the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Women in Power Systems Transformation program, which focuses on empowering and upskilling women to lead in the clean energy transition. 👏 to Erin Johnson, Ahni Hecht, Karin Wadsack, and the many other amazing individuals who make this program possible!
Through the Women in Power System Transformation (PST) initiative, USAID, NREL, and Global Power System Transformation Consortium are empowering women, in all their diversity, to lead clean energy transitions globally by addressing barriers to their entry and advancement in technical, engineering, and leadership roles throughout the power sector. 🌎 🚀 In celebration of #InternationalWomensDay, hear from the 2023 Women in PST interns and fellows about how participating in this initiative not only helped them develop new skills, but inspired them to lift their voices and be catalysts for change. Women make important contributions in business and in society at large. We are determined to lift women up. I am proud to work at Vattenfall. Why? Because we are one of the drivers of the energy transition. This is also a female success story. End of last year, our CEO, Anna Borg was included in the TIME Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential actors against climate change. In our highest level of management, we have 6 women and 5 men, leading the way. Our women are trailblazers, but we don’t just stop there… We have officially committed ourselves to achieving equal leadership, opportunities and pay by 2030 because we signed Equal by 30. Female manager numbers have since increased, and systemic change is happening. It is on all of us to make this a reality. You want to find out more? Breaking Barriers: Celebrating Female Engineers in the UK 🚀 In the ever-evolving landscape of the UK utility and power sectors, female engineers are making remarkable strides, shattering the glass ceiling and redefining industry standards. At UPP, we are privileged to witness and support these trailblazers who are not only excelling in their fields but also paving the way for future generations. One such inspiring story is that of Dr. Emily Clarke, a leading figure in renewable energy innovation. With her groundbreaking work in solar technology, Dr. Clarke has not only driven significant advancements but also mentored countless young female engineers. Her leadership has been instrumental in positioning her company at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions, proving that gender is no barrier to excellence. Another remarkable example is Sarah Williams, who has risen to the role of Chief Engineer at one of the UK's largest utility firms. Sarah's journey from a junior engineer to a top executive is a testament to her resilience, expertise, and unwavering commitment to her field. Her success story is a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating that with the right support and opportunities, women can achieve extraordinary heights in traditionally male-dominated industries. At UPP, we are committed to identifying and nurturing such exceptional talent. By leveraging our research-based methodology and deep industry insights, we ensure that more women like Dr. Clarke and Sarah Williams have the platform to excel and lead.
