📣#LVS IMPACT: Since our inception in September 2013, LVS has made a significant impact on the lives of over 720 Veterans. This week the Veterans Affairs NZ (VANZ) announced they are suspending the Veterans’ Independence Programme (VIP) for new clients without a service-related condition. The VIP programme offers services to help veterans live independently in their own homes – things like lawn mowing, house and path washing, gardening, and medical alarms. The Veterans’ Support Act 2014 (aka the law) requires VANZ to support veterans with qualifying service who have a health condition as a result of their service. The quantity and complexity of those veterans' claims have been increasing, and some veterans are having to wait for a year or more before their applications can be processed. Understandably the suspension of these home support services is disappointing for some, but it allows VANZ to direct their resources to veterans with a service-related health condition. Which is as it should be. Like triage on a battlefield. Waiting times for veterans seeking treatment from VANZ for service related health issues has blown out far beyond a year and that isn’t a recent issue. As an example of the wait times currently endured by veterans seeking support from VANz, see the shared post detailing Greg 'Pup' Johnson's 18 + month battle to get the MRI recommended by an NZDF medical officer whilst in service. For those who believe themselves hard done by because their lawns will not be mowed or their windows washed, consider that there are numerous veterans suffering from significant operational service related health and wellbeing issues that have been waiting years to even BEGIN treatment. No self respecting veteran would ever prioritize the services offered in the VIP programme over MRI's, cancer treatment, hospice support, etc. And if you think the resource situation is bad now, it's likely that less than 50% of those veterans suffering service related health and wellbeing issues with qualifying operational service are clients of VANZ. Not 50% of all veterans with qualifying operational service, but 50% of those with service related health and wellbeing issues. The overall situation is a lot worse than the loss access to 'house and grounds' services. If you're looking for someone responsible to vent on for last weeks change in circumstances, here are the Ministers for Veterans over the last eight years; Craig Foss Paul Bennett Ron Mark Meka Whaitiri MP Peeni Henare And of course Chris Penk MP. Keep in mind he's only been responsible for a few months though and has inherited the worst veterans support space in the Western world / OECD from his predecessors. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that veterans are at 72% higher risk of suicide than those who have not served. To address this issue, HMP Global is partnering with Stop Soldier Suicide — a national nonprofit working to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% by 2030 — for the 2024 Day of Giving. Leesa Henderson, PT, DPT nailed it. This is why at The Operation Child Care Project we say, don't call me resilient. Military spouses don't want to be applauded; we don't want companies to go out of their way to take photos of us for their websites and social media. We don't want another free coffee. We want honesty. We want transparency. We want the gaslighting to stop. Will applying for unemployment benefits due to a PCS in my state (that bragged about allowing this for military families) take me over 40 hours to complete and be denied so many times that I give up? Awesome, just tell me that so I can plan. Is the waitlist for on base care so long that I won't stand a chance at access until my child is 2 years older? Great, just say that so I can save my energy. Is the new X, Y, Z program so convoluted and lacking accountability for anyone involved in its processing that I will wonder if it is indeed me who is the problem? I got it. Write that out clearly so I can move on. During the pandemic there was this meme that went around when daycare shut down and people (predominately mothers) had to work from home with infants and toddlers. It was a burnt out super woman asking for help but everyone kept yelling above her voice, "You are amazing! You are a superhero". She didn't want to be a superhero. She wanted help. Military spouses aren't out here passively surviving; they are intentionally pushing against barriers from every angle. The least we could do is be transparent about programming, resources, and lifestyle. Thank you Leesa for your honesty and sharing your story.

If you're not utilizing your benefits, ask yourself, "Why Not?" These benefits are yours, already allocated, and not using them only disadvantages you. Personally, I recently followed advice and resubmitted my disability claim, going from 90% to 100% T&P, unlocking additional benefits. Need help navigating benefits? This event is exclusively for residents of the following states: ME, NH, VT, NY, PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MO, DC, MD, DE, NJ, CT, RI, MA The event is open to Veterans, service members (active/reserve/transitioning), families, caregivers, and survivors to connect them with valuable resources and speak 1-on-1 with VA experts. While this event is geared toward recently separated and transitioning service members, it is open to ALL Veterans, service members, families, caregivers, and survivors in the identified region. NJ SOS Vets is actively providing extensive services to veterans in Bergen, Hudson, Passaic, Essex, Morris, Union, and Sussex counties in Northern New Jersey. Our programs include: - Quarterly County Networking Meetings: Join us as we discuss and coordinate services for veterans in the mentioned counties. It's an opportunity to connect with other stakeholders and improve the lives of veterans in our state. - Policy Advocacy: We work with representatives from various service providers to advocate for legislation that benefits veterans.
